Tuesday, June 23rd, 2026 07:45 pmS-i-l was trying to remember the name of their usual and long-time server at Le Paradis and bemoaning the fact that age erases the ability to remember names. Bro knew what it was because, as s-i-l said, he has a sticky brain. Which he does. I forgot just about everything I studied in high school almost immediately, languages apart, but my brother remembers it all, all the outdated physics and chemistry and algebra and geography.
And I also forget names, both of people and of things. This led me to a great peregrination about Loblaws looking for uhh 'bug spray'. Various clerks opined it might be among the facial stuff, or maybe household stuff, or maybe that catchall by the automatic tellers-- which no, but that's where they keep the eyeglass cleaner I've been searching for since March-- or yanno maybe we don't stock it at all. Well, if they were thinking of Raid and its ilk, they probably don't, but I finally located the *mosquito repellent* down by the scented candles and household furnishings, which is dear god why? Loblaws is not an intuitive store, but seriously. You think I'll buy a pillow or chopping board while trying to find insect repellent?
Which I needed because the back garden is maybe not as much of a jungle as it has been but still contains the creepers and cherry stones of decades. I changed into long trousers and tucked the bottoms into socks, and sprayed my arms and neck with the stinky stuff and hopefully will have no bites tomorrow. And though it's coolish with a northern breeze I was still sopping wet after filling a bag with, well, cherry pits and vines and woody stems and squashed cherries. If the extension cutter weren't such an unwieldy beast I could actually have cherries because the branches over the back steps are untouched by bird or beast.
