Happy Camping

ETA: Not so happy camping. Why does bloody lj stick certain posts from abroad in among the FL entries I've already read? [livejournal.com profile] radiofreebanri and [livejournal.com profile] jttr show up a day later than they should have. It's pure accident that I saw the latest gaiden ep at banri. Sheesh. (Goes to change FL page to show=50)

The new Bleach illustration album on amazon.jp is advertised as BLECHイラスト集. It really *is* called All Colour But The Black, yes with that u in it. I am consoled for all the times I've confused my radicals (性 牲, 精 請) when reading too fast, as likewise my inability to tell is it wa or is it ga.

Otherwise I want to read an mjj story and am still tripping over the fact that if I want to read it I have to write it first. Surely there's a mistake there somewhere?

Otherwise the vagaries of broadband keep me running winipcfg, to which my mind always remarks 'twoipbyc.'

There's Bleach wank at f_w. There's also [livejournal.com profile] incandescens doing Bleach/ Alice in Wonderland crossovers over in her own lj's comments section. And I'm here still googling "bleach (name of person I swear I've never heard of before)" because there are 500 characters with both a family name and a personal name and people use either indiscriminately, and write het stories about Mr. Stripe-across-the-nose who appears for- what- maybe three panels in the manga? Man but Bleach fandom believes in equal time for everybody. I'd be impressed if I wasn't so dispirited.

(Parenthetically, is there something about het shipping that makes people crazy? First Harry Potter, now Bleach- is there anything in yaoi to match those pairing wars? GW and X, maybe, but both of those were a long time ago and everyone has since grown up, more or less.)

And really, why is everyone getting so worked up over Rukia and Ichigo and Orihime when the hottest character in the series is Ichigo's sword?

Thanksgiving. The trees are all yellow and half the leaves have fallen from the cherry. That's one early autumn we're having here.

If I manage this properly I shall cease existing entirely for the duration of the weekend. Got my two volumes of Cent Démons after paying- no really- $1.68 GST + $5 handling charge, found I'd read all of vol 2 too recently in Japanese to want to read it in French so read the last half of vol 3 and the afterwords which the bunkou doesn't have. ('Some days I wish a bomb would fall on Ginza- oh, and my bad, childbirth isn't covered by the nat'l health cause it's not a sickness.' Sheesh. It's covered here; and they wonder why the birth rate's declining?)

Then dove back into Bleach. I shall say that a series that requires you, at vol 21, to remember something that happened back in vol 3 is a cut above most shounen series. But the result is having to read in two directions at once: forward from 21 in Japanese and backwards from 4 in English to refresh my memory. This is why I've been underwater. And down I go again.

With the best will in the world and a pile of manga new and old, all I can read is Bleach. And not even early Bleach, 4-7, bought to fill in certain gaps in my knowledge (like what's the kanji for Quincy and **why** dear God??? I have the answer to the first of those but not the second) but only later Bleach, vol 19 and following. Err- which will probably mean nothing to those who read translations because I'm not sure if even the French are up to the early 20's yet. Whatever, it's the roller coaster segment, yes-you-know-the-one. Is why I'm still up at 2 am.

He's following his nose, isn't he? I sense nose-following happening. I'm sure he's following his nose. Oh well. Three more tanks and then I'll go read shoujo like a rational human being.

I shall just mention, to mention, that Bleach in Japanese is a faster read than Bleach in English. This says nothing at all about my Japanese skills and everything about the WTFery of Viz's translation.
Cut for thoughts on shounen WTFery in general )

Also the artwork is so much better in the original. The loss of detail in translations is one of those things I never hear complaints about, and should.

Yes, yes, laugh if you will. Having bought Bleach up to vol 15 in translation I went down to Kikiwai and bought vols 16-19, all they had, in Japanese. The damage came to $13.68 per 400 yen volume. Kikiwai is still Highway Robbery North, but you can do this when you're the only game in town. I doubt Iwase is any cheaper, given that *they* charge me $20 per 550 yen magazine.

Clearly must win lottery and establish my agents in Tokyo. Alternatively, must embrace Buddhism and renounce the transient and illusory pleasures of the flesh mind.

I see how you draw djs about Bleach. I don't see how you write fanfic. The characters are still visually impressive, emotionally minimal, and have the onstage time of summer lightning. Blink and they're gone. This may be the result of reading in tank rather than monthly, and maybe they'll all come back again for a huge company reprise. But at the moment I'm thinking fondly back to Hikaru no Go, whose pace and focus makes it look like Lawrence of Arabia next to Bleach's Star Wars.

The problem is that The Beguiling doesn't have vol 13. If I skip a volume of HnG as I did accidentally at one point, not much has changed. If I skip a volume of Bleach I may find myself in another dimension at the start of vol 14. And The Beguiling is the only store that converts US$ to Canuck at the current rate they bought it for from the publisher, not the laughably outdated figure given on the cover. 7.95US is not 12.95CD any more, you money-grubbing twits.

Friday evening when the soft grey rain was blowing in I went by The Beguiling, which is the local comics outlet back of Honest Ed's, which is the local neighbourhood landmark (and for anyone who knows TO, my god does it mark the land) to find they had a Labour Day sale on, cover price of American dollars = Canadian dollars plus no sales tax. So I got the next two volumes of Bleach, execrable translation or not, plus one lonely copy of Monster in Japanese. (I could bitch about comic stores these days- even Kikiwai- carrying only English translations, but I'll save my breath. Kinokuniya- Bookoff- why do you scorn this Canadian city?)

My problem with shounen fight manga is that its denizens run more to character design than to, y'know, *character*. Visually grotesque personage appears, makes threats, shoots, and leaves, all in the space of half a tank. Bleach is currently being no exception to this pattern, hence the recourse to Monster. But this raises the question for me: how do you remember who everybody in the SS is? The Bleach fic communities provide me with an overwhelming cast list but in the manga all I can identify are Mr. Floppy Hat, Mr. Curlers in his Hair, and Mr. Any Smiling Blond Psychotic, whose cloned younger brother is currently running in Papuwa and calling himself Okita Souji because yeah Papuwa is doing riffs on the Shinsengumi as well.

So is there anyone else of importance I should know about? here around vol 12 or so...

Hmph. I have finished vol 9 of Bleach. That only took me since May. I think I can see what people see in it, and I might too--

Through Death Note 3 and Bleach 4. Conflicted. I don't like reading Japanese in English, though I suppose the second- third- and fourth-guessing of DN reads easier in English than Japanese. (Probably doesn't make much sense in either language, and DN's implausibilities are more staring in English- the unquestioning naivete of top FBI agents being especially wince-worthy.) But mostly it's the feeling of reading blind. What's this Chad thing? I find that his name is Sado, but google fails to inform me if the Chad reading is the mangaka's or the translator's or what. Which irks me.

But it's the literary questions that stump me )

I love to sneer at other translators' idiocies because it makes me feel better about my own gaffes.
