However many things make a post, again

1. I've been cooking more and eating out less. It's very satisfying even when simple. Things like a poached egg on caraway rye bread spread with avocado; a few grinds of the pepper mill, a sprinkle of sea salt, and voila: Heaven. Or my stir fries, now I've learned how to handle the garlic (mash don't chop, fry with the ginger, then remove. Garlic dislikes me intensely.) Broccoli, mushrooms, celery, bok choy, and tofu. I have to freeze it almost immediately or else I'd eat a pot at a sitting.

But the downside of all this is dishes. Every day there are dishes. Somehow in the last fifteen years I've never had dishes in this quantity. I must practise daily Buddhist mindfulness and treat the dishes as an opportunity to wash dishes, much as I've sort of managed to treat flossing my teeth as an exercise in flossing teeth: the thing done for its own sake and not for the end goal. The end goal isn't worth it, really, so one dismisses that aspect and just does the thing itself.

I'd still love a dishwasher. In a renovated kitchen. With an attached powder room. In the rebuilt mudroom. Will be a while before the impermanence of downstairs toilets leads me to give up the dream of having one.

2. So I've been reading books on Buddhism for almost three months now. So far I respond best to the ones by easterners. The westerners talk as if they're selling something, and there's an awful lot of Self present for a religion that's all about the non-existence of the Self. There's no Self in the Dalai Lama and Thich Nhat Hanh, just a serene 'this is how it works.' Granted, the Dalai Lama is a bad place to start: he's teaching the graduate course, and a lot of the BA basics I got from westerners. Still.

Among the western examples is something called Just Add Buddha! subtitled 'Quick Buddhist Solutions for Hellish Bosses, Traffic Jams, Stubborn Spouses, and Other Annoyances of Everyday Life.' His solution for hellish bosses is to imagine yourself as your boss' mother, observing your little boy having a tantrum. 'You can't truly stay angry at toddlers. They're too puny and helpless. They lack a sense of their own failings.' Well maybe. But you can give them time outs until they cool off, and you can't do that with a screaming irrational adult.

His solution for barking dogs is to imagine you are Kanzeon 'the bodhisattva who hears the cries of the world'. 'You are to the barking dog as Kanzeon is to you: a being of enormous compassion and inconceivable powers.' This is bad enough. But worse: when you find yourself in times of trouble, follow the lead of the Lotus Sutra and call on the Bodhisattva:
repeat these words...

Eyes of compassion, observing sentient beings, assemble an immeasurable ocean of blessings

...And if you're really in trouble, don't worry about the whole of the verse, just cry "Kanzeon!" and feel comforted.
And no I say no I can't no. Guanyin maybe, Chenrezig or Kwanum or Avalokiteshvara if it wasn't such a mouthful. But Kanzeon to me is firmly and unmovably an ijiwaru-ppoi hermaphrodite who wears too much lipstick, and that's that.

3) My local library renovated and half its books disappeared, or so it seems. Luckily everything I want is at the branch down the street from work, even if half of it doesn't circulate. (The Judith Merrill collection buys *everything* SFF so nobody else has to, but it's a reference library. A pain.) To round out my DWJ reading I went there and snagged an armful of volumes I'd never heard of, plus those missing Brusts. Plowed through the Brusts doggedly and then turned to dessert. Dessert was a disappointment.

A Sudden Wild Magic was... odd. Didn't sound like her at all. The three stories in Shopping for a Spell touched that same puzzling thing I noticed in Black Maria: extreme paralysis in the face of social intruders and appalling behaviour. Granted a certain kind of Canadian niceness dislikes telling people to get out, we're still capable of saying no on occasion. DWJ's people don't say no. They are wet and a weed and ultimately irritating.

The stories in Unexpected Magic were a slog to start but got steadily better. I very much liked Everard's Ride. And loved the moment in Little Dot where the cat is sleeping happily on the guy's lap, 'and then, suddenly, there was this huge human woman's voice screaming "Len Iggmy son of Trey, la moor Tay Una!"' ie Gli enigmi sono tre, la morte una!

That in fact is how I first met Turandot, in a now vanished dress shop on Bloor Street whose BGM came from the classical radio station that was, just then, playing an ad for the Canadian Uproar sorry pardon Opera's fall season. It turned out to be the Apocalypse Now version (heads on poles, dirty mist, generic peasants as the population of Peking) and confirmed me as a fan for life.

Don't knock the addition of Kanzeon! I'm sure it must be immensely comforting to imagine, when you are beset with the troubles of the world, Kanzeon sitting back with a nice glass of wine and snickering at the puny mortals in the world below! :D

Oh, immensely comforting. Sure. 'Wer, wenn ich schriee, hörte mich denn aus der Engel Ordnungen?' OK, OK, shall stop being pedantic. 'And if I cried out, who would hear me, up there among the angelic ranks?' as Rilke said, and the answer is no one. Kanzeon expects you to get out of your troubles yourself.

Ooh, have you tried the thing where you freeze tofu and then thaw it before you stir-fry it? It develops this completely different sponge-like texture where it soaks up sauce and can make a very pleasant change.

I read about it in your lj but haven't tried it yet. However since I'm too tired to cook tonight, maybe I'll freeze my tofu overnight and see how it works tomorrow.

ooh tofu and bok choy or cabbage or spinach! The children adore it! ^__^

And I too try to cook more at home that eat out. it does work out cheaper. the dishes ... most times I don't know probably second nature by now. although there are days when all I want to do is magically zap it all away ... and ohhh to live in a house with all the bells and whistles and picket fences... But then I think ... if I did live in a house ... the cleaning would most likely kill me off. So a one floor two bedroomed apartment is good by me. ^_^

ahahaha yup yup Kanzeon will all be how you see hir to me too. But mostly out here its Guanyin.

The children also like pumpkin. Which is a good thing because I like it too. Usually I make pumpkin and aubergine/eggplant/brinjal/nasu curry. Sometimes I use the Japanese curry cubes and sometimes I cook it Indian style and use coconut milk. The beauty of a pumpkin curry is that you can make a sizable portion and freeze it in portions and use as and when. In a good freezer - the portions should be used up over a period of two or three weeks even. I can get three meals for a family of four, out of a sizeable portion.

But with the weather so hot now I make lots of salads, light pastas and fishy dishes. And and recently I found that I can make salmon and spinach quiche. I'm still too afraid to make my own pastry (so I buy the ready made frozen stuff and roll it out myself) and hey presto quiche!

Of course when having dinner guests I don't say that I didn't actually make the pastry myself. Hee hee!

Ahhh see LRD-ers ... we just love to talk about food.

The two bedroom apt is going to have to change once the girl starts growing, you know. And how do you cope when the in-laws come visiting?

What kind of pumpkin are we talking about? Our western orange thing that barely has enough flesh to make a pie, or something else?

The in-laws visits tends to be an interesting mix. for all concerned ... but we have managed so far. Although this year it might get a little more interesting. Eep!

Ahhh housing in Singapore ... is also an interesting situation all of it's own. And it isn't easy to explain, not easy to explain to those that do live here sometimes. Heheh. So we could probably do with a bigger place.

As to pumpkins ... wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pumpkin) doesn't actually say much here except about canned pumpkin. And I really don't use the canned stuff too much, it's way too expensive and it's a rare kind of a find. Our pumpkins are grown locally or come from M'sia, and sometimes Australia. Thankfully they're usually sold in halves which makes them easier to handle. Better to buy two halves than a whole. And two halves can make two to three meals depending on the size. (not kabocha of course they're dainty little things, but still yields quite a bit of flesh!)

The battle is of course peeling them, or rather cutting away the hard skin without slicing fingers in the process. But they cook quicker than potatoes, so if using a recipe with potatoes in it, throw those in first.

They're great on barbecues or baked. Because it's easier then as all you need to do is scoop away the seeds and just pop them into the oven or on the barbecue. It's easy enough to scoop out the flesh for eating straight away or, using the softened pulp for cakes and pies and soups n things. If baking though I found that I prefer the taste of grated pumpkin than the mulched stuff.

Uhhmm - I like pumpkins can you tell. ^_^ They really are so versatile ... and of course they're healthy too. I think on average we have pumpkin twice a month. More sometimes.

Total confusion. Your second link calls itself a Japanese pumpkin, and googling that gets me kabocha-- which aren't dainty little things where I come from, but pretty hefty. So maybe we're dealing with two varieties of kabocha, quite apart from blue squash.

I suppose when I say dainty, I just mean they're smaller than the average pumkin we get 'locally' but a whole one still needs two hands to hold one comfortable, or you can cradle one I guess. I don't mean mikan kind of dainty. ^_^

I should go out and take pictures I guess ... but ehhh it's busy around here. And the madness that is school holidays just kicked in. OHhhh the painnnn! Some of it will be fun, because I get to hang out with the children. And of course there will be days when we'll have done lots and I will still hear ... "But Mamaa-- we haven't done anything today!" haha!

Ah, your pumpkins includes all kinds of dry, yellow-orange fleshed winter squash! That excludes watery things like acorn squash, but includes things like butternut, blue, kabocha, etc.

That works for me, as pumpkins are just a particular orange winter squash.

Heh. I really should be studying that too, it permates so much cultural stuff that it's worth knowing about even if one isn't trying to practice it.
