Am currently having pre-trip pre-flying jitters in the form of three year old tantrumming about having to Dress Like A Gurrl.
I don't like dressing markedly!female because it's completely unnatural for me. Not that I wander about in jeans and wife-beaters and tattoos ordinarily, or ever, but I don't dress up. I hate dressing up. I hate it mostly because good clothes for women can only be used on good occasions which in my case I have not got, and why am I buying all this useless drycleanable stuff that I'll never wear again when if I was a guy I could wear a good suit that would come in handy for dinners out and opera and funerals and stuff like that. The conspicuous consumption aspect of the whole thing pisses me royally. There needs to be some recognizable form of Dyke-wear for formal occasions. 'Will Moddom be dressing straight or gay? Gay? Then may I suggest the morning coat ensemble with silver lamé combat boots?'
Of course the worst of good clothes is good shoes. I can't wear good shoes. My feet are swollen and deformed with toes that point where they shouldn't. High heels, sandals, pretty little footwear: I can't do that any more. Man am I tempted to wear my sleeveless black dress and my faux-silk white overtop and my BIG CLUMPING ORTHOPEDIC BLACK LACEUP SHOES. That'd show them. (In the event I shall be wearing Tender Tootsie slippers- if my feet don't swell even more- and taking cabs.)
(I should have kept my grandmother's dresses and not let my younger brother walk off with them. They were large, flowing, comfortable, made in France of hand-made lace, and no one could even guess what shoes you had on underneath the skirt because it was so long. She was 2" taller than me in her heels. So nah.)
Grah. More gin. And more Cent Demons, because it's only $13 more to order two volumes from France than to order one volume from Montreal. $27 for a single volume once shipping's factored in? That's more than Kikiwai charges for Japanese manga. Heee doi.

I must admit... a pain to take off when you have been 'randomly' chosen by security to be checked thoroughly! before getting on a plane. (by virtue of name I felt) but I wasn't bothered. They had to handle my socks! ^__^.
Ooh! and black sleeveless..works everytime! I have umm black sleeveless in various lengths. ^__^
Whatever you choose in the end...
Have fun wherever you're going! *Waves*

I wish I had your guts. Sleeveless black evening dresses and Doc Martens are, well, not something I personally can bring off.

over-eating for the last ten yearssins but it has no sleeves and thus needs, y'know, Dressing Up. And doesn't go with orthopedic shoes. Very few things go with orthopedic shoes, oddly enough. Or Berkinstocks, even.no subject

I laughed my ass off at this one, because that's exactly how I dress, normally.

Whoever invented jeans- no, whoever made jeans wearable by anyone but cowboys- needs to be pulled from his grave and his bones broken on the wheel, just by way of driving the point home.

The store ladies and my co-workers all told me that the little black dress is the thing for evening weddings and not floor length at my age. I don't wear little black dresses. I certainly don't want to pay for little black dresses. So I gave up and am going in a basic black top and pants with an over top thing for some color and to hide the flabby arms. Reasonably festive, I believe. (Lime green and buff yellow. I wanted the red and gold one or the teal and turquoise one but they didn't have the right sizes.)
You should bring your black orthopedics. I went and looked at dress shoes and then negotiated with the sales person that pants cover a multitude of sins and could I please have the walking boots? I am warned not to wear the low boots with skirts, as it's a fashion faux pas. I intend to wear the low boots with white athletic socks and a skirt anyway. You can tell me whether it's acceptable when you see it. I have a friend with black sneakers and she wears them everywhere. Even funerals. With dress pants they are nearly invisible.
The one thing I did discover today was thigh high panty hose. I had become resigned to digging out my mother's old garters and getting stockings, but these may be better.
Should I bring any books? Cent Demons?

You have made me very happy. My younger brother is the white sheep of the family and keeps all the strait-laced Catholic morality that the rest of us abandoned. I can't even think of him in old lace, which went to his wife in any case.
I should have gone for pants, and probably would have if I'd found the real Fat Women's Store with the reasonable stuff last week, but it's moved and you can't get to it from the rest of the mall, is why I didn't. So I have a dress (wrathful) that I can't even bicycle in. Shall certainly bring the shoes since I intend to tromp around used Japanese bookstores a LOT.
Thigh high? We don't have those here. Old ladies have them in Japan and I wear them as knee-highs.
But your cent demons is in Chinese, isn't it?

La, Madame, you amaze me.
Don't worry about rides for us. Is why God made trains and cabs.
Afterwards won't you want to crash and be ready for Saturday?

If you'd like to hang out afterwards, that would be lovely. I imagine you can use the change of pace if you are not too tired.

Well, I hoped someone would find it funny. ^_^ Though morning coats are cool. I want one for me.
The abomination that is the separate blouse and skirt ensemble is... abominable. I know it's the same principle as shirt and pants but pants can be tailored to accommodate hips and no waist, and vests or jackets hide the worst of the short-waisteds' lack of torso. All are glaringly obvious with the female suit. Men's suit jackets are usually buttoned but I've rarely seen a woman's done up, and certainly not buttoned as high.
Pantsuits are it, if only because the top can be lenthened to maintain proportions. I'll be wearing a pant-skirt thing, probably much less dressy than yours.
(People wear running pants to the opera here. We have no class.)
