Pleasant pastimes
Came home from my cortisone shot to a package in the mailbox. Good, my Judge Dee from England arrives almost promptly. Gather necessary impedimenta ie current manga, wordtank, current novel, current 3K volume, package, and mandatory icepack for the mandatory six hours with feet up following shot. kickinpants saved for just such an occasion as the present; and thank you again, TTG) and turned to open package to suss out my new book. Which was smaller than I'd thought-- somehow I had the idea it was a hardcover-- and heavy, and was not a book at all but nojojojo's prezzy zooming up from Noo Yawk.
Chinese vocab fridge magnets; children, Chinese studying, for the use of. Equally useful for Canuck obasans doing the same. I can't put them on my fridge as yet because a repairman's coming to look at it tomorrow; but I spent a happy half hour trying to express Kliban's poem in Chinese:

My cat is fat so I will dine'我的貓是大;我吃我的大猫' Well OK, 'my cat is *big*', and I'm not sure how the future works in Chinese, if it works, or intentionality, if that's what it is, and the grammar book is downstairs. But this is still loads of fun. Thank you so very much, N!

Rough translation, attempting to keep rhyming iambic pentameter in seven-character style: 我有一只大肥猫 (wo3 you3 yi1 zhi1 da4 fei2 mao1 = I have a big fat cat); 吃完它会肚子饱 (chi1 diao4 ta1 hui4 du4 zi3 bao3 = eating it all will fill my belly. Also depending on where one places the comma: eating its fill, it will be full)

(I used to see overweight Makciks, and Pakciks too, in the diabetes and weight loss clinics in the Singapore hospitals where I worked, and I expect they will still be there when I return.)
I am well, thank you..just braving the cold in several layers of clothes every day and night (single-digit temperatures = D: for this Singaporean)

I, um, feel for you? Like triple digits Fahrenheit for me: not what I'm used to or at my best with. Layering does help, as do socks in bed.

The vocab of this ostensibly fridge poetry pack is odd. They give me tall and short, big and small, but not fat or thin. Jump, run, swim, go and come, and more possessives than I think one uses grammatically where (if I understand correctly) subjects and possessives may be omitted if you know what you're talking about. Nonetheless I have two or three my, our, your, her, his and their apiece. And one 了 and one only; which is fine, because I don't know how to use it.
But among the animals was one for dragon that I didn't at once recognize. Simplified hanzi, you have no soul. Hence I felt it incumbent to attempt a little story in puppy Chinese:
紅色龙难过. 愛的藍色哥哥不来(到?)房间. 愛的黑色弟弟在床上. 紅色龙快乐地笑跳进床了.
The vermilion dragon was sad. His beloved blue-but-not-the-right-blue older brother doesn't come to his chamber. (But) his beloved black younger brother is in his bed. The vermilion dragon, smiling happily, jumped into bed The End.

(I am currently wearing three layers on top, with track pants and socks, and and sitting next to a not-terribly-effective heater. You can take the person out of Singapore, but not the tropical tendency out of the person.)

In winter I double bag the track pants-- usually I wear what the Japanese call spats underneath, though I'm totally lost on what the English word is. Close fitting cotton-polyester pants, almost like footless tights, that you can wear under a leotard or dress.
