Title: Jesting Pilate Day/Theme: Tues Feb.10 - I know it well, the nakedness of truth Series: Woxin Changdan AU cont'd Character/Pairing: Fu Chai, Fan Li
I tend to agree with Fan Li at the end of the discussion *scratches head*
IMHO building a canal allowed Wu to disguise the nature of its intentions (ain't nobody here but us busy little traders) until it got right into Qi itself, which it could use as a base for attacking the western territories, with its back to the sea. Of course it seems like a wildly circuitous gamble that might not actually pay off, unless the other states were too weak/complacent to do anything even if someone guessed Wu's intentions. Also (looking at a modern map, since the Spring-Autumn one placed Wu quite far from Qi), the provinces of Jiangsu (Wu = southern Jiangsu) and Shandong (Qi = approximately in middle) border each other, so maybe it wasn't that far?
My 20th century take on Fan Li's question is that seductive people can't not act seductive even when (they think) they're putting amorous puppies in their place.
Ahh, OK-- busy little traders. It's only Wu's southern neighbour that doesn't believe a word it says ever.
the provinces of Jiangsu (Wu = southern Jiangsu) and Shandong (Qi = approximately in middle) border each other, so maybe it wasn't that far?
*Thank you.* Basic info like this is what makes a series either historical or fantasy. The maps in fact would have Wu and Yue a fair distance from each other and divided by mountains, suggesting that sane leaders wouldn't even notice the other one was there.
