Ha! Top Ten Chefs of Ancient China.

Seven of the ten were women. France, I spit in your general direction.

Why is 太和公 (Tai4 He2 Gong1) of Wu the only one she doesn't give dates for? 'Tail end of Spring-Autumn' sounds promising. Does the Chinese article give any more info, ye who know?

(Icon shows Fu Chai feeling the effects of some slightly off prawns.)

Oh that is awesome. :D

I think the dates for Spring Autumn were given in the 易牙 entry as 722 - 481 BC. So tail end of Spring Autumn would be 500 BC thereabouts?

Nope she translated pretty much everything. in fact the Chinese article didn't even list any dates.

Hmmm. Something says if DD could find dates, or at least a King's name, for everyone but 太和公 that possibly 太和公 is as mythical as Xi Shi. However, 'tail end' suggests Helu, except that excellent chefs sound more like Fu Chai's sort of thing than his father's.

Possibly someone WZX brought with him from Chu...

Possibly the chef de cuisine from whom Bo Pi picked up his fish-frying skillz, who came over in the exodus of Chu talent...

The dates she gave are for the dynasty, not for the cook. There's no way 膳祖 could have lived from 618 - 907.

太和公 was actually a contemporary of He Lu. According to history Guang, Prince of Wu, in order to usurp the throne sent one of his men to learn to cook fish from Tai He Gong. Then the prince invited the king and other nobles to a feast, at which his man, under the pretense of presenting the famed fish dish, killed the king. Prince Guang, of course, is Hé Lǘ.

I meant, she had dates for Huan of Qi, say, and names for everyone else.

And thank you, that's what I wanted to know. So how did you know? Google or general knowledge?

Google in Chinese. This was in the first few entries. You probably know enough kanji to do it too.

The chefs are listed in order from oldest date to youngest, if that helps any.
