Tidings of the season

(Ah! It's back. lj's back! I breathe again.)

Happy birthday to my clutch of end-of-Decembrists: [livejournal.com profile] luxetumbra, [livejournal.com profile] joasakura, and [livejournal.com profile] stanking.

Otherwise, I'm terribly sorry but I shall be unreachable for the next month or so, on account of [livejournal.com profile] paleaswater just sent me 大汉天子 and 女巡按, those Uncle Ming omnibuses, both without English subtitles. I intend to drive the cold winter away by sitting in front of the TV squinting ferociously at the Chinese ones. At the end of which I shall be either blind or semi-literate. (There's what looks like a laptop DVD player in the Bloor stores. I'm... tempted, if that's what they are, because these DVDs will play on a region 1 player, and it'd be nice to have mandarintools handy when I'm, um, reading my TV series.)

I just wanted to point you at one of the more interesting little deciphering kanji bits I've seen lately: message 59 of http://www.librarything.com/topic/5305

Have fun with your disks!!

Your icon...it cracks me up! Have fun watching all your goodies and if there is anything you want from Japan (I am in Tokyo right now) let me know. I think last time I was here you wanted batterie...was that you? Anyway, I hope you have a good New Year.

It was you who got me the batteries! How many years ago was that? (And why were you buying me batteries... I hate my memory.)

Thanks for the offer. If you're in some kind of touristy place, or even if you're staying at a hotel with a gift shop, what I'd like is a snap-top change purse. They come roundish or square and are usually covered with Kyoto crepe silk. No big deal, it's just useful to have. The change purses here are either made to American specifications, or else the Chinese don't have large coins. But Canadians have two kinds of dollar coin and usually nowhere to put them.

The icon and the original picture alike crack me up. [livejournal.com profile] xsmoonshine is a genius.

If what it takes to read Chinese is a knowledge of written Chinese, I'm cooked. I can't even decipher blurry Japanese scans on the basis of what it sort of looks like.

Oh they got to you finally. I was getting worried. Thought it might be perverse enough to go missing the one year I sent it out on time. >_< I wish I could cook up English subtitles for you, but failing that, I will at least try to provide large arc summaries for 女巡按. ^__^ (I haven't seen 大汉天子, so can't help you much there)

Speaking of DVD players. >.> If we were to head downtown today, we could drop one off for you, if you might be available.

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Am at work from 10:30 to 6, alas. Unless you want to drop it off at the house- 543- while I'm out. Door is on the latch if you don't have the key.

[identity profile] nekonexus.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, well, we didn't make it downtown anyway. Kiro's feeling "run down" with a cranky back not fit for subways.

Rest. Take it easy. Who needs transit stress on top of all the other kind?

[identity profile] mvrdrk.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Because you claim some of your things don't run on western batteries properly. Takes Japanese ones.

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I know why I wanted batteries (and fortunately the Word Tank has discovered a brand it doesn't suck dry in two weeks) but the question is why [livejournal.com profile] ayonoi offered to buy them. I think there was an exchange of favours, or possibly an exchange of e-mails, involved along the way. Much as [livejournal.com profile] umadoshi knows me because she says I sent her a bunch of Saiyuki doujinshi. I recall sending djs to soemone- several someones- but didn't remember her as one of them. Like that.

I'd say let it be a mystery to me-- incentive to learn more hanziand all that-- but I know I'll cave in pretty soon.
