My two cents

About once every twenty years history gets made in a way that feels good. The Berlin Wall, the moon landing, and I wasn't around for whatever came before that. My reactions-- the ones I'll say aloud, that is-- swing between Nicely done and What took you so long. Truly, I really didn't think it would happen. I'm amazed and delighted.

I also remind myself that this is a man whose politics are to the right of Stephen Harper's. Now there's a bucket of next-day cold water in the face.

But Fox News says the president-elect is a socialist! That makes it true, right?

Please?

I never thought Americans would elect a black president, even one who's half white. I can't believe they'll ever elect a socialist president, or even a capital-l Liberal-type one. But I've been wrong before because I never thought Americans would elect a black president...

It feels really good.
But like Obama said, this isn't the change, it's still going to take hard work.

Yeah. There's some riff that needs to be done on 'that's one giant step for Americans now, but one small step for America in the long view of history.'

In all fairness, even leftist US-Americans are to the right of almost everyone else. He's still way better than the alternative... and hey, once people discover the USA doesn't break up and fall into the sea because they elected a black guy, maybe they'll eventually work around to electing someone of slightly more radical views?

Oh, certainly better than what McCain looked like, and miles better than what they've had for the last eight years.

I'm just afraid that this radical departure coinciding with a recession will convince the unthinking that the US did indeed fall into the sea because they eleceted a black guy.

Unrelated but - I'm in Toronto and just realized I'll have Sunday free til 3PM or so! Would you be free to have lunch maybe? ^^

(Am at the Delta Chelsea on Yonge/Gerrard/Bay with internet access via U of T.)

Lunch may be a possibility. It depends whether the current unhappy state-of-sinus gets better or goes ballistic and takes my sense of taste with it. Is Saturday too late to decide?

Not too late - just let me know whenever. ^^

Gone to green guck and fever. Sorry, I think I'll spend the weekend at home wrapped up with hwbs and codeine.
