In general I'm underwhelmed by this round of the Olympics. Politics, politics, blah blah blah. Nothing to do with my city having lost the Olympics bid, truly: I'd hate living in a city disrupted all summer by the Olympics, and the Olympics would hate to be happening in the summer TO is currently having. But today's google cartoon makes me very happy:

Go, Goushou!

Who was playing against China today?

I've got a thing about constant headlines that go '(This Canadian athlete) fails to qualify for Men's Swim' '(This Canadian athlete) fails to qualify for 100 metre dash' and so on. Sad, yes, but it's not just the Canadians that the Canadians are interested in, after all.

Between the timelag between China and the North American west coast and the fact I'm trying to catch up on 200+ pages on my flist, I'm having a terrible time keeping track of what day it is where...however, it appears that China played Angola on August 14, and won by a good margin.

I was looking at the blue evening skies out the window a minute ago as I was connecting to the Weather Network to check tomorrow's weather. Then I saw TWN map saying Toronto was currently having a thunderstorm. 'Thunderstorm? Ha ha ha---' (softly out the window) 'Boom boom boom.'

'Ah, a cold wind blowing here at Spadina and Bloor, how refreshing.' In paper- 'Violent thunderstorms and funnel clouds struck Downsview this afternoon.'

I mean, I can see why slushy rain at Bloor would be a snowstorm at Sheppard, but 5 km away? That's just silly.

Oooh. I never knew this about Toronto. Reminds me of Melbourne (not that I ever lived there. er.)

Melbourne sounds neat. Er, and I thought you *were* there? Or was that funnel-spider Sydney?

Yes! I saw that and thought, (a) great! and (b) Goushou!

I think I remember that there were several games of basketball today (vaguely watching the Olympic updates while knitting), but the only bit about basketball I remember was that America beat Greece. I think. Neither of which are dragon or mouse.

For Goushou~

The ball, symbol of our hopes, Oh!
A pearl, protected by my fangs, Oh!

Go me.

Shoot from behind the three point line--
Three points, aiyeah!
Six metres and a quarter away from the basket--
Three points to me!
My hind feet stand behind the three point line--
Three points, aiyeah!
My head looks right down into the basket--
Two points only, oh not *again*.

(pipang is in the stands doing a very embarrassed little "yay!" for Goushou)

Does Pipang even know the rules of the game? I bet he's busy constructing metaphors to describe Goushou's red figure against the white clouds.

he has no idea. He just knows Goushou seems to be pleased with it.

Although he thinks "travelling" sounds like a good thing, and can't understand the penalty involved.

"Seasons and days are travellers of eternity;
Clouds and petrels wander the world's rim;
Who bars their way?
Who bids the moving waves come to a halt?"

and lo, then, why is the ball awarded to the opposing team?

That's adorable! =D

Yeah, I really liked this one. :D It was a total nice surprise.

Thanks for posting the cartoon! I try to check daily just for updates to the logo - this one is the best so far.

IIRC China played (and thrashed) Angola. Today's badminton one is a little less charming, but am very much enjoying Google's anthropomorphic zodiac.

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless the mouse is also Zodiac, I'd be a titch annoyed if I were Angola.

I always try to check google daily just for their little cartoon. They almost always make me smile. XD
