Like stalactites forming, drop by drop, over millennia

I hear the stories in my head, I just can't be arsed to write them on a screen where inevitably they look much less inviting. So I said I'd sit in front of the computer for an hour every day and do nothing but write until I finally finish a story.

At the end of an hour I have an eight line poem for Gouen and a four line response from Shanten. And this is the story I'm enthused about.

Dragon Poetry ... one is intrigued and one might ask if you would be sharing it at any point?

Because one loves poetry .. ^__^ please?

Also that is a good excercise maybe I ought to try it.

Well, when the story's finished, I suppose? All it is is the poetic equivalent of 'How ya doing? Can we get together some time?' and 'I'm not busy at all. Come round any time.'

A poetry contest would take me an eternity to write. At least a paragraph is a paragraph is 90% alright when you write it, and you can leave it and write another and then come back. Poetry is like the worst of writer's block- write a line, erase it, write another, erase it; and you can't go on to the second line until the first is OK.

Mighty pillars form over the millenia from drippy stalactites!

(or: excuse to give new icon a good workout.)

The operative word being 'millennia'.

Who's that in the icon?

Oooo, more dragon poetry! Can't wait to read it! One request, though; is there some sort of geaneology or family tree for your dragons? I get a wee bit confused at times!!! Sadly, much as I love imagery I'm a visual person, and a diagram always makes things clear for me :)

*genealogy

Way down at the bottom of this (http://mjj.laleeloo.com/alhambra/funeral.htm) is a family tree.

So Gojun, Goukou, Gouen and Gouron are all brothers, and their next generation down are all the Kai's, and Gouerh is their father, and Goushun Gouerh's father? Is Gouron the same generation as Gouerh then? *is mildly confused* ^^;;;

[identity profile] rasetsunyo.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Grandfather: The Black Dragon

Father's generation: Gouerh (silver), Goushun (blue), The Hermit

Gouerh's sons, in birth order: Goukou (blue), Goushou (red), Goujun (white), Gouen (black)

Goushun's sons: Gouron, Gouhei, Goumyou, Goumin, Goutsui, Gounen

Kais are indeed the next generation down.

So to answer your question, Goushun would be Gouerh's younger brother, they have an unnamed youngest brother who has left the Court and become a hermit. Gouron is Gouerh's nephew.

Gouron is Gouerh's nephew.

And Goushun's son, hence he's first cousin of the four ocean kings, Goukou, Goushou, Goujun and Gouen. He's given the courtesy title of Uncle by the kings' sons.

Of course the Gouerh generation should have had a different generation marker than Gou, but when I wrote my first stories I didn't know that there are generation markers. Which is actually fine because even later on I learned that Gou isn't a generation name, it's the family name.

Now, are you totally confused.

He's given the courtesy title of Uncle by the kings' sons

And actually is their uncle, by Chinese reckoning, instead of the Western cousins-degrees-removed thing which I never did figure out.

Useful to know. So anyone in your parents' generation is an uncle or aunt even when they're not your parents' sibs? How far does this go, though? Once you get to the great-grandchildren of sibs we mostly stop counting degrees of cousinhood and just go for 'cousin.' (Or Who's he?, depending on country of origin.) Would people still know that Mr. Ling's grandfather was your great-grandfather's brother and therefore he's your uncle?

[identity profile] rasetsunyo.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
We've established that maternal first cousins are 表+brother/sister and paternal ones 堂+brother/sister elsewhere, have we? Or am I deluded. Anyway, parent's cousins would be 表+aunt/uncle (maternal) and 堂+aunt/uncle (paternal). Theoretically the system could be applied to any number of generations but I've never heard it used past great-grandparents/great-grandchildren; possibly because anyone more distant are just ancestors or descendents.

[identity profile] mvrdrk.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Maternal first cousins are 表. Yep, we do the same thing!

In my family, 堂 is reserved for cousins with the same last name, so dad's brother's kids are 堂, but dad's sisters kids are 表.
