Lazy days of August

The day that you go out to buy avocadoes and come back with a new Pratchett that you didn't know about, even if it's a co-authored Pratchett, is a good day. I also got the avocadoes and some dumplings, so am satisfied on all fronts.

Actually, I was in the bookstore looking for more Hilary McKay, having polished off Permanent Rose this afternoon. I shouldn't have been looking for McKay: finances suggest I borrow from the library. But I jones to buy books as some jones for sex or beer.

Also finished Tim Powers' The Drawing of the Dark. I like Powers' mangaka-type all over the map-ness in regard to sources and genres, but wish he'd stop fridging his female characters.

I know you said in the first part of the sentence that you were planning to buy avocadoes, but my pre-breakfast brain read the phrase "... but I also got the avocadoes" as some sort of euphemism for intestinal distress or something like that. "I have to avoid eating spicy curry because every time I do, I... get the avocadoes, if you know what I mean."

p.s. avocadoes are delicious.

Avocado does rather well as a euphemism for intestinal distress, given its colour and consistency. (Do you know there's a colour on people's college hoods, the kind worn over the robes at graduations, called goose turd green (http://www.flickr.com/photos/reabhecc/593317278/)?)

Now we can sing our theme song:

Aaavocado
When will you come to your senses...

Hmm, I'd call that green "lima bean" myself, but I haven't been that closely acquainted with goose turds in my time.

You been out ridin' fences for sooo long now...

(the mental image of an avocado in full cowboy gear riding a scrubly horse down a line of ill-kept fences is very strong in my mind right now)

Speaking of Pratchett, there is going to be a new one (and single-authored) coming out in September. Would you be interested in a UK copy, to arrive in October?

Oh yes, I most certainly would! unless it weighs your luggage down too much?

Not at all: I'll be delighted. Please let me know if there's anything else that might be of interest that I can bring over: I'm sure I'll be doing shopping with you (and with Beth) to refill my luggage before going back . . .
