I survived Amtrak (half hour late due to freight trains.) I survived NJ Rail (30 minutes late due to downed wires + 20 minutes waiting at a bridge by Secaucus for all the backed up trains to pass us into NY.) I survived NJ taxi drivers who couldn't find a building right round the corner even though he told me it was right round the corner when I said I can't walk the two blocks to Mulberry St. I survived the desk clerk who didn't believe I was the person whose name was written on the envelope with the keys in it. I even survived me who managed to lose my wallet inside the bedroom of the apartment and *then* managed to lose (ie not find) half the money that was in the wallet.

It only took 15 hours but I am in New York. Or rather New Jersey. Tell me again why people travel?

And happy birthday, Fearless Leader.

I'm sad too. Fate always conspires against us. *Next* year in Jerusalem.

^_^ it will be worth it! Enjoy! *love and hugs*

Is being worth it so far (Vermeers and Chinese paintings of plums at the Met, Japanese cakes, and the chaos that is NY after the baseball series is won by the the Yankees: interesting to have seen once.)

Adventure! =D
*tries to put a positive spin on it*
Frankly, I travel to escape the formless dread that stalks my brain.

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The formless dread attends me when I travel. Murphy's law/ where will I lose my wallet *this* time?

Wow, what a nightmare! Get some rest ... .

Oh, I shall, I shall. The resident small person goes to bed at 9 and the large people go with him.

Because without travel you would not see friends and small persons! Have a blast!

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2009-11-09 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
That is true. Without travel he'd be graduating before I ever met him.

Tell me again why people travel?

Totally unwarranted optimism. ;)

I hope you had/are having fun.

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2009-11-09 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Utterly unwarranted. They moved Kinokuniya without telling me so I tramped all round Rockefeller Square looking for it when it was on the same street as Bookoff all along.

The beasts! (But it does have a better cafe now, and I like the basement and the culture sections on the ground floor. The actual manga section I find a bit uninspiring, sadly.) The French bookstore around there closed too, alas.

Did you go to Asahiya? And did you find anything good at Bookoff and Kinokuniya?

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2009-11-10 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'd heard Asahiya closed. I didn't find Kinokuniya at all, and my best find at Bookoff was Flora's Dare. But at least I have something good to read on the train now.

Asahiya actually just moved (though several years ago now) and is really hard to find because its address is on a different street from where the actual store entrance is. I was there a few weeks ago though. It's definitely still in business. Kinokuniya overlooks Bryant Park, but I always forget exactly where it is and have to walk around the long way from Bookoff because I always go the wrong direction.
