Went to Staples to check out the French electronic dictionaries.

....they have French keyboards.

Also they're the Larousse Compact which may not be as exhaustive as I need. My google-fu isn't strong enough to find what level the Compact Larousse caters to, but I sure know where to buy them now.

Maa, motto kangaenakya...

(More on Chinese apps for cell phones. Am amused that one guy wouldn't buy a Palm pilot just to get a Chinese dictionary on it. But I'm considering buying a cell phone for exactly the same reason...? Surely used Palms are cheaper.)

Used Palms are indeed likely cheaper - decent ones can be had in the $25 - 50 range. And the screens would be bigger than cell phones.

The screen is another issue, of course. Not that the Palm is huge, but it's bigger than any cell I've seen short of a Blackberry. But of course I'm also debating getting a cell for myself. Meh, by the time I understand a) enough Chinese to make a handheld dictionary necessary and b) the ins and outs of cell phones, the whole ballgame will have changed again.
