I'm using this icon way too much these days
Oh, glad someone noticed. Power off for two hours from midnightish at the same station that let us freeze in the dark back in January, and not a word from Hydro even now.
Were I richer than I am I *would* get a Blackberry with net access, just because the only people with info about these things are online. Mind you, if power's off in the house then my router's off too, right? Maybe should save my money for battery-powered fans for when this happens in the summer.
(And Firefox still insists on updating without asking my permission.)

But they're not the only cels with internet connection, are they?

For example, my LG Rumor (http://www.itechnews.net/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/Sprint-LG-Rumor-Smartphone.jpg) lets me access the internet at a cost of 5c/page for pages outside the Virgin Mobile main ones (same price for pay-as-you-go or on a plan). So I can get Gmail or Twitter, if I want to. Likewise, most "smartphones" will do this, without requiring that you get the data plan.
The main drawback is always screen size and what you can live with, but in case of emergency and lack of other news sources, they can be handy.

I cannot convince myself to pay the money it takes to get a decent data plan for my cell phone. I have pay as you go coverage and even that is a struggle for miserly old me.

I'm going to have to get a cell eventually, it's just that the whole thing is traumatizing to technophobe me.
