Browsers

I DLed an old version of Firefox to this machine because I'd heard mixed things about the new ones. So I'm running 2.0.0.3, which is familiar, but has the familiar problem of crappy looking fonts (like a few pixels are missing). IE looks infinitely better, even at low resolution. Anyone who's running a version of 3, are there good points to it?

(Guy at work who has latest version of everything says he can't tab in Firefox, which sounds strange. But neither can I unless the page automatically does so, even though I've clicked 'open new pages in tabs'.)

I'm resigned that lj will always look crap no matter the browser or the resolution. This has gone far to breaking me of my lj perusing time waste.

I run Firefox 3.x (whatever is the latest) on both my work computer (XP Pro) and my Mac without any issues. I don't notice much difference between 2 and 3, other than some of my plugins/addins not working properly right after 3 came out.

For opening links in new tabs, you still have to hold down the CTRL key when you're clicking the link unless the link itself is coded to open in a new window instead of the current one. CTRL-t should open a new blank tab.

Thanks. Did the plug-ins work OK eventually or did you have to reinstall? And does the thing ever stop trying to update without asking first? My bro's laptop and the one at work both do that, and it drives me bonkers.

I think they've all sorted themselves out, as of 3.0.7 (current).

And no, it always auto-updates in the background, though it does prompt you whether you want to install the update or not, and once installed, whether you want to restart firefox or not.

I like people to give me options on whether I want an update in the first place. IME Firefox nags at you every time you open it- updates are ready! click here to install!- and doesn't give you a Go away and quit buggin' me option. Though to their credit, the DL prompt for Firefox 3 this morning did give me a 'No never' button.
