Ming fever

I'm googling for pictures of Chen Daoming's hands, being too lazy to go downstairs and look at my DVDs, and I come across this page, which is amusing in a Horizon magazine "I shall not look upon his like again" way. (References an article that demonstrated eg the physical resemblance between Machiavelli and Pierre Trudeau.)

And then I come across this from 少年包青天.

I will not pay $80 for an unsubtitled series where he plays what must be a minor part...
...but I'm almost tempted. [livejournal.com profile] paleaswater, was this the one you said made him look like Nomura Manzou?

(And what, pray tell, is this intriguing-looking thing that can only be played on PAL though it's DVD-all? Have not time before work to decipher the chinese, though I think I'm dealing with a bunch of names there?)

Oh MY! That last image was a jolt to my heart!
Beautiful.

Hmm. The title's a bit different, but the synopsis is that of 女巡按, as described by [livejournal.com profile] paleaswater here (http://paleaswater.livejournal.com/29729.html).

Uncle Miiiiiiiiiiing. :DDDD

[edit: note to self: do not attempt to html when tired.]

ouf! Be still my beating heart! maybe I should go sleep huh? ^__^

Wonderful images. thank you for sharing them sorry I can't help with the other queries.

It's different, though, isn't it? The magistrate in this one is a guy.

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2008-12-18 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, sorry. You mean the intriguing-looking thing sounds like 女巡按. It's just that the utter absence of any females on the cover of the DVD makes me wonder what's up.

[identity profile] paleaswater.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's the Young Magistrate. He's in so few scenes there are any number of compilations of Uncle Ming scenes only floating around the net. I'll go look it up for you..

[identity profile] paleaswater.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's most definitely 女巡按. The actors listed include Sui Cui Feng, who is the same actress in the series. Since she's an opera singer, and has hardly played in any TV series beside 女巡按, I think it's pretty safe to say it's just another attempt to take in the hapless Uncle Ming fans. (That's not even his character on the cover. He's clean-shaven in the series!!)

Pal just means that you need an all-region DVD player that also handles pal/ntsc conversions, which almost all of them do. I have yet to come across an all-region player that doesn't play pal. It's just another button to remember to press. Also I should point out that all dvd's will play on a computer's dvd drive, regardless of region/format.

!! Really nice pics! Thankyou

At this point I'm totally confused. You mean bearded! historical! Uncle Ming on the cover of the DVD is supposed to be the unbearded assistant to the wife-turned-magistrate in 女巡按?? I thought it was a major role? So what series is all the guys-with-beards really from?

[identity profile] paleaswater.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
The illustration above in your post is from young magistrate (少年包青天), where he plays a minor role. The DVD for sale that you linked to on yesasia, Qian Gu Xun An (A Magistrate for the Ages), is actually repackaged 女巡按, where yes, he plays the unbearded assistant to the wife-turned magistrate. The other two guys on the dvd cover are actually from the series, I think one is the evil nemesis at the court, and the other a corrupt official that became canon fodder early on. That picture of Uncle Ming is actually a composite, you can tell that the head and the body do not belong together. The armor I think belongs to someone else. The head I think is from either Woxin or Jiangshanfengyuqing. Can't really figure it out.

Oh? A minor role as what? He looks utterly delicious.

Scuzzbags.

He plays ba xian wang, the Eighth Lord, uncle to the emperor, and in line of succession. But yielded the throne to his nephew in exchange for a position that one might call guardian of the realm. In the series he was usually the deux ex machina that saved the day when young Judge Bao runs up against powerful magistrate. A very elegant and very remote figure, always shrouded by a kind vague melancholy.

Oh! Oh! How utterly perfect. And it has no subtitles, she says, heartbroken. (goes back to working at her Chinese grammar book.)

Have been googling around and find crunchyroll works so much better than tudou or any other. Alas, the young magistrate series they have looks to be #3 and no mention of Uncle Ming in it. Somebody else does have the whole of that series up, stop-start; is intriguing enough that I wouldn't mind watching it on this computer, if this computer played DVDs which I don't think it does (runs Win98.)

Must. Get. Laptop. (Must investigate those portable DVD players and see if any are all-region.)

[identity profile] paleaswater.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I just remembered that my set of this is in vcd, not DVD, so I'll ship it to you. You should be able to watch it then.

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Vcd? I don't know if those will play on my DVD player. Some do, most don't.

[identity profile] paleaswater.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, on a closer examination of the dvd cover, the other two characters are not from 女巡按 either. That chap in red is in fact the evil nemesis from Young Judge Bao! And the other guy, get this, is Gou Jian from the TV series Yue Wang Gou Jian, made in the same year as Woxin and totally eclipsed by Woxin, much to the producer's chagrin. The actors all appeared in the series 女巡按, but not as these characters.

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2008-12-20 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
That's... unutterably weird. And I'm pretty sure that Uncle Ming's head there is from Hero, but the armour certainly isn't.
