Wretched excess

I have a perfectly good copy of Thud. British-Canadian paperback, bought new from independent Book City and not scuzzy Indigo or amazon, and thus not merely good but virtuous. But I have a preference for hardcovers, and when I was told the blue'n'white used bookstore on Bloor had Pratchett in hardcover I went to look. They do. The American edition (and remaindered, not second hand.) Which bought, and read during last Sunday's thunderstorm. The typos are as WTF as they're reputed to be, to the point that certain sentences make no sense at all. Figured at some point I'd do a reread from the paperback and correct the text: because I still prefer to read in hardcover.

Erm. Was there again today. They have the remaindered British Thud in hardcover.

Which I haven't bought.

Yet.

I missed the bit where Vimes going all Die Hard action hero-- good man pushed too far becomes unstoppable killing machine- was *not* in fact a good man pushed too far and the way it ought to be. Was inded the way it ought not to be. And I've read both Men at Arms and Night Watch.

No, but I have hopes for this evening, and my friend has managed to pull off most of my writing (except for the very most recent file, which had my springkink prompts and writing on it, drat), so it could be worse.

(And fortunately I'd sent an Onmyouji piece on that file to another friend for beta-reading, so at least that one's not lost.)

Argh. Am pleased the onmyouji's safe, but the springkink stories-- argh again.

He slipped in a major Da Vinci Code parody amidst the usual why-can't-we-get-along dwarfs and trolls story ^^

The game sounds very interesting too...

Is that the secret hidden in the picture of Koom Valley, or is it more? I wondered why he went on so long about it when the picture didn't actually play a huge part IMO.

I was vaguely aware that there was a Da Vinci Code parody going on, but missed most of it due to not having read the DVC book. Alas.

I assume that alas is ironic? Everything I've seen suggests tDVC is unreadable.

DA VINCI CODE struck me as very lightweight--almost fluffy, I guess, with an exaggerated sense of its own importance. It had a couple of interesting concepts, but they weren't explored as much as I would have liked, and I found the characters very annoying. Thankfully it's a quick read. I still threw it across the room when I was done, though.

There is no such thing as a quick read in my world. Even translated manga takes me over an hour. And the samples of his prose that I saw made boils erupt on my skin.

The alas is ironic, yes.

You are made of sterner stuff than I.
