Vanished texts

Here is how black water seeps into reality.

I'm reading Kohri no Mamono, what I have of it. There are two main couples- Blood (not Brad) and Ishuca; and Rapunzel (a guy, like Yuki Kaori's Jezebel) and Wild/ Weird/ W(u)irudo. I know the guy's name is Wild/ Weird/ Wuirudo. I've seen other people call him that.

Today I'm reading the Great Plot Reversal in vol 11, and see that Rapunzel is suddenly calling Wild by another name. Ah, I think, part of the Great Reversal- we go back to his original name. Where the vocalizing dots are not on the 'to', making it 'do', but on the 'wi' making it 'bi'. Reversal, right? Uhh- right?

I double check in the earlier volumes.

No. The dots have always been on the 'wi', from the guy's first appearance on. Wild does not exist. Wild has never existed. He's been Built from the start. Built.

Cue Twilight Zone music.

I never stopped to question it, you know. In Chinese it was translated to wei lu te (威魯特). (veloute? LOL!) On the calendars that came out over the years in romaji it was Wird sometimes and Wild sometimes.

I've rationalized it to myself that it's like German - spelled as W and pronounced as V. But I realize that's a silly rationalization.

This makes his name Vilt. A *bit* better than Built. Luckily the ten-ten on the u-small-i keeps it from being Wilt...

...I think...

No, Japanese kana grappling with v's and w's and whatever just makes my head hurt.

No clue if this will work. Will delete it if it doesn't. From the 2000 calendar: Wird - the wizard in the east tower (http://s248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/mvrdrk/?action=view&current=wild.jpg)

It works, alas, it works.

Glad to know even the Japanese can't read katakana.

*You* can laugh, she weeps. But not only has the mangaka called a character Built, everyone who works with her *and the Chinese translator* calls him something else. How are foreigners supposed to LEARN this language??? huh? huh?? HUH???
