Oh noooo

amazon.jp has switched from DHL to Fedex.

amazon's 3000 yen shipping charges + amazon's 300 per item handling charge + Fedex's $30 paperwork handling charge + laughable GST (eg $1.50 on a $25 order) = too damned expensive to order from Japan any more.

Oh well. It was fun while it lasted, but fun never lasts.

Booo!
I like DHL way better than FedEx.

I heard complaints about it, but I never had any.

I feel your pain.

These days amazon in the UK is delivering far too much stuff by private carriers, which always means that I am out (being at that work thing) and never in to get it, and either I have to traipse round to the post office, or they're the sort of carrier that never leaves a card at all, and, well. Grr.

The never leaving a card at all thing is unforgivable. At least Fedex allows you to do a blanket 'always leave it at my door' thing- which, yes, is possibly no good to someone in a flat, but is the salvation of house-dwelling me. Of course, if there's tax then I do have to drop by the PO, but the PO isn't that far away, luckily.

I have to admit that the fact the apartment block's postbox area is _behind_ a locked door doesn't exactly make things any easier, and they probably don't want to ring every number on the entire block till they can get someone to let them in and deposit a "you were out" card.

Still. Some of them get round this by taping the card to the front door. Wish they all would.

Eek! That's a horrible markup. I'm waiting for an Amazon.jp parcel too, so I'll just have to hope, since books don't attract duty or VAT in the UK, that there just be no paperwork charge.

I just compared international shipping charges; do they send parcels to Europe the long way?

I have a feeling the charges for Europe are a volume thing. Just not that many expats there as in the States.

Hmm. Remind me again of why Bk1 (http://www.bk1.jp/) is no good for you? I can't actually recall the last time I ordered a thingie from them, but I think they just use regular mail.

IIRC Bk1 ships through the States and then over the border by courier, entailing precisely the same problems with paperwork.
