March of the Emperor

because in France March of the Penguins was titled La Marche de l'Empereur.

This has made my *month*. My month was already happy because Motohashi Keiko (yeah, Third Reich Motohashi Keiko, she of the excessively pretty men) has a weird tales supernatural series ongoing in Nemuki involving long-haired Chinese deities-of-some-description, red dragons, blond Japanese and an art style even more to my tastes than Beauty and the Beast. Yes the long-haired Chinese guy in a cheongsam/ qipao is a staple of manga, even if the thing hasn't been worn regularly in China itself since before this obasan was born. Why not? It's a sexy garment, but most of the period when it was worn guys shaved their heads in the ghastly Qing fashion. Japanese mangaka are merely compensating for that historical aesthetic injustce.

Work? You mean you guys take the fourth off, whenever the fourth is, and don't make it a long weekend?

BTW, the Bleach books went out in two packages last Thursday; hope the earlier volumes arrive first.

Yes. We take the 4th off no matter when the 4th is. Some places will give you a Monday or Friday, if the 4th is on Tuesday or Thursday so you can have a 4 day weekend. Wednesday is just out of luck, though.

That is absolute genius. I'm off to share it.

I wonder if there's a way to engineer an AU where the Manchurians brought over the qipao (or was it already in use by the Chinese?) while allowing the "subjugated" people to keep their traditional hairstyles and headgear?

I suppose you could always declare that the Ming Dynasty never fell, and keep it at that.

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Wikiword is that the qipao was a Manchurian importation, so I'm afraid Ming has to fall. The AU has already been done more-or-less by the Kou Josei mangaka, who allows her sympathetic main characters to keep their (blond as often as not) flowing locks.

But yes, definitely: any Qing set piece needs to be AU with respect to hair- always everywhere without exception.

:gwahahahahaha: although the mental image of thousands of napoleon-impersonators getting it on?

Motohashi Keiko has a new series?! I have to see this. What's the name? And oh, I'm such a huge fan of cheongsam on men, especially during the early Republic, when they finally did away with the braid, and accessorized with a panama and a long scarf. ^__^

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
(MIME fails me again. Spits.) 黒孩子. I see no ads for tankoubon in the magazine so maybe there haven't been enough chapters yet.

Yeah! Go the panama and the scarves, and welcome back the hair.
