(no subject)

Because I feel ijiwaru I shall post the translation to the spring Gaiden episode that hasn't yet appeared online. Well, not on many people's line, whatever.

The karma may be that Enrai is the spitting image of Yakumo, but that's not what I mean.

p.1 Lamentation for the one still buried, even now, amid that pale crimson

p.2 The road to despair up ahead

p.3 F/X hurtling bodies
mad dash
The four rebels who have crept into the imperial palace

p.4 are headed towards the deepest level of the castle basements, making for the dimension gate that leads to the lower world
Soldier: Don't let them get away! Kill them if you must!
On the way they break through a guarded passage on the first floor of the northern wing
Konzen: (surprise)
Gokuu: Here they come!
Soldier: (grunt)
F/X Gokuu trips the soldier

p5 Soldier: Damn kid-- guhhh!
F/X Konzen's heeled sandal digs into soldier
Kenren: It's the door at the end of the corridor, Konzen!
F/X door pushed open
Konzen: Gokuu! Hurry!
Gokuu: (grunts as he kicks)
F/X soldier goes flying

p.6 F/X thud of running feet
Soldier: WAIT!!
F/X soldier's gurgle as Tenpou jabs him with his sheathed sword
Kenren: Get in here, Tenpou!!
F/X Kenren kicks door shut

p.7 F/X Tenpou and Gokuu panting
Konzen: gasping for breath
Kenren: You OK, Konzen?
Konzen: Yeah...
Kenren: Looks like they're not going to give us a rest.
Konzen: What?
F/X squadron on upper level with bows drawn aiming at the guys

p.8 (round chamber ringed with archers)

p.9 (hollow noise)
Konzen: What...?
Konzen: (thinks) We're surrounded?!
Tenpou: Should have known- you're a bright boy-
Second Squadron leader of the Western army

p.10 Tenpou: Enrai.
Enrai: I'm honoured by your good opinion of me, Marshal Tenpou
Tenpou: Right now I'm just a nameless fugitive. Oh, and I've resigned as marshal
Kenren: Enrai- he was leader of the first squadron before I was
He and Tenpou didn't get along so he was moved to another division.
Enrai: So you're resigned to your fate?
Tenpou: Not yet! Or rather, how about just overlooking our existence?
Enrai: ...you always did take your jokes too far

P11 Enrai: I always figured someone like you didn't know how the men who followed you felt.
Tenpou: Nothing of the sort. I just get on best with people who like joking too.
Enrai: And because you're that kind of officer, you were content to have a mere fourteen men attached to you.
Kenren: I don't care what you say about us two. But I won't keep my mouth shut while you make fun of my squadron

p.12 Enrai: Really? So what are you going to do?
You have a nerve, acting big when things are like this.
Tenpou: Don't stop- just keep running through them.
Konzen: What?
Enrai: I'm going to give you what you deserve
You filthy--

p.13 Enrai: RATS!! (J note: well, hedgehogs, actually, but really...)
Tenpou: RUN!!!
F/X flat out running
Enrai: Shoot them!!!
F/x bows drawn back
Voices: Guahh! Guh!
F/X blows

p.14 Enrai soldier: Gah---!!
(Enrai's men fall with arrows in them)
(Kenren's men fighting)
Kenren: !!?
F/X one of Enrai's men falls from the parapet
Kenren: You guys--?

P15 F/X sound of hand-to-hand fight
Kenren soldier: Are you alright, General?! Marshal?
Tenpou: What are you doing here??
F/X wounded soldier groans

P.16 Enrai: So the mice have come out--
F/X Enrai soldier grunts as Kenren soldier kicks him
Kenren soldier 1: We'll take over here
Kenren soldier 2: Go on ahead while you can, General!
Kenren: *Cut it out!!* You guys can't get involved in this!!
Tenpou: We're not your commanding officers any more!!
Soldier: --sorry! Can't hear what you're saying, marshal!

P.17 Soldier: 'In the absence of orders take personal responsibility'- that's our squadron's motto, right?
Soldier: That barbecue was really good, General!
Kenren: sheesh- these assholes!
(flashback) Kenren to Tenpou: Everyone wants to fight *with* you!
Konzen: Tenpou!!

P.18 F/X Enrai's swordstroke
Enrai: (yells) Ooohh--!!!
F/X Tenpou's sword sheath falls to the ground

P19 F/X Enrai spits blood
F/X blood spurt
F/X Tenpou's sword stroke?

p.20 Tenpou: --this is my final order
Kill them all!
Don't leave a single man alive who saw you here. Do you hear me!!

p.21 Soldiers: YES SIR!!!
F/X Tenpou and Kenren start running again
Tenpou: Good. We're out of here.
F/X Enrai soldiers guarding the door prepare for attack
Kenren soldier: But in that case--
The General and the Marshal will get all the glory of having killed this lot!
Enrai soldier: Don't let them get away! Kill them!
Kenren: (laughs) Don't be such a party-pooper.

P22
F/X Kenren's gun firing
F/X Tenpou runs soldier through
Soldier: Gahhh---
Gokuu: Ten-chan--
Ken nii-san, hurry!

p.23 F/X Kenren's boot step
Soldier: Take care, Marshal, General!
Soldier: Let's have some more barbecue!
Kenren: Got it, got it!
Next time it'll be the first class special
F/X doors slam
Enrai soldier: (frustration)
Kenren soldier: Eizen! Goyou!
F/X Enrai soldier punches Tenpou soldier

p.24 Kenren soldier: We're gonna carry out this mission no matter what. This is the Western army, first squadron's final battle.
Tenpou: Well then, let's be on our way.
The longer it takes the more people we'll have after us.
Kenren: Tenpou

p.25 Kenren: Next time we split the cost.
Tenpou: But naturally.
Tenpou (to Gokuu): Are you afraid of me?
F/X Gokuu shakes his head

p.26 Gokuu: I figured, whatever happens I'll always like you, Ken-nii and Ten-chan.
The way those guys back there did.

Just wow! Thank you so much for the translation. I am so familiar with Minekura's sense of action that I could picture it in my head (of course, my imagination can't make up for her beautiful art). I was quite moved how Tenpou and Kenren's soldiers had not doubt where they threw their lots. That loyalty, those kids are going to die but at least they are doing it for something and someone they respect and believe in. I personally it was awesome how commanding Tenpou was when he gave his final orders and then the banter between him and Kenren.

I was a little puzzled as of why he asked Goku if he was scared of him but it makes sense, Goku has never seen Tenpou as the Marshal, only as Ten-niichan. His response is not surprising XD (that little Monkey is too cute for me to resist, he makes me cry and smile. I have to say that when I see anything with Anpan man on it, I smile!).

Much love to you.

Cool. (cough) I'd sneakily swiped it from chaosd, but I haven't looked at it yet. ^^;

. . .

ANYWAY, while I'm in the vicinity, this has to do with that other thing the other day, regarding Hakkai the Secretly Simmering Pot of Psychosis. It (belatedly) prodded to mind a humor fanfic called "The Monkey (http://web.archive.org/web/20030831110137/http://fix.dejabu.org/monkey.html)" (durendal and The Beef Chick):

Gojyo: Shut up! Oi, Sanzou, er, Sanzou-sama (and I'm not making fun of you this time!), I had nothing to do with this. It was all Hakkai's idea. He wanted something to kill.

Hakkai: I'll kill you! I mean, maa.

I've been dropping by your journal for a while (found you via [livejournal.com profile] oyceter ^^), and this post reminded me that I've been meaning to say hi and ask if I can Friend you.

The translation is lovely! And someone on a community I'm in provided this link to scans of the chapter (http://www.melbournego.com/Gaiden/Ward__12/chinese/01.htm) (not actually in Japanese), for people who need it.

Re: [delurk]

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
No need to ask about friending- it's a free internet. Welcome aboard.

Yes, I was going form KaKa's scans too, fortunately before she did the Chinese scanlation to them. I think the Japanese version may still be somewhere on her site; but in any case Kagenami should be home soon from vacation and we can look forward to the radiofreebanri version with commentary.

Thank you! I'm just getting into Saiyuki, and the fandom looks lovely, but I tend to be slow to actually say hello to anyone. ^^

Ahh--if it's someone you know, I should ask--I looked around the site when I got the link, but didn't see any English terms of service. Does the person who does the scans mind if the link is passed around? (Which seems silly to ask after the fact, but if they object I'll be less casual about it. My primary fandom is touchy about that kind of thing. :/)

Thank you for this. The artwork is (I assume when I get to see it will be) stunning. but the words are important.

It's a little like watching a crash unfold; I know what's gong to happen, but I need to watch for glimmers of hope.

You'd think a long time Doctor Who fan would have a better grasp of twisted tenses.

Can I just ask? Is this (flashback) Kenren to Tenpou: Everyone wants to fight *with* you! ambiguous in the original in the same way as the English can be, or is a very different construction?

(grim) Crommie's definition of a mortal sin. However much one may argue the morality of how wrong is it to order your men to kill the men who clearly have orders to kill you.

Re: [delurk]

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think you have tacit permission to pass the links on. KaKa password protects some stuff, but she said in an email to me:
*cough* My friends and I are happy that you and members of the WA and Saiyuki JL communities enjoyed the scans and we'll keep up the work.
Take that as yes, and if the bandwidth goes ballistic she can slap a password on it.

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Tenpou's also blood-stained from running a man through. Yes, a bit scary, also in view of what Gokuu doesn't quite remember doing himself.

Hello! *found you through F-List*
Kyu... May I Friends you?

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
(Gahh- repost)

Not ambiguous at all. I suppose it should be something like 'along with you' or 'by your side' to avoid that interpretation. The original ep, now in Gaiden 2, has Tenpou telling his men to stay back while he takes on a bunch of large and dangerous youkai beasts alone, nearly getting himself killed, having Kenren disobey orders to come save his neck, and the other men yelling 'Marshal are you alright!' 'Marshal, we're with you!' Kenren points out, understandably testy, that they're *Tenpou's* men and they want to work alongside him as any soldiers would. Tenpou has had a subordinate die on him in the past and, the implication is, doesn't want to repreat the experience.

(I should note, because I'm a grammar geek, that Japanese has a good and much used construction to express 'have someone die on you' with connotations of all the trouble that caused you. Tenpou doesn't use it. He uses the causative which means both make and let: I let one of my men die, I made one of my men die, with connotations of personal responsibility.)

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, well, this I think is why Gonou did what Gonou did. I know karma theoretically works the other way- order a murder in one life, get yourself murdered in another- but the element of repeating the same mistake to greater and greater personal cost has its appeal.

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
By all means. (Don't most people's friends come from friends' friends' lists? Mine do. ^_^)

Same here ^^

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
No, that's what he said and that's why he said it. But the second squad had already been ordered by Enrai to shoot Tenpou and the others down. (This after Litouten had given similar orders.) Giving the order to Tenpou's men not only makes sense by our standards, it's *unnecessary* by our standards. Enrai's men are in fact seem quite ready to shoot at Tenpou and anyone else on his side: killing them is simple self-defence.

I'm considering the morality from Heaven's supposed pov- killing is wrong, you don't do it, the men haven't been trianed to do it. Under those circs it might have been necessary for Tenpou to give his men permission to kill, both to save their lives and save their careers. If any: his men seem to think they won't be walking away from this fight. And their enthusiasm for bloodshed suggests that Kenren isn't the only one really pissed off that he can't kill things.

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
No, we're not sure of anything vis a vis timeline, just that Minekura herself and Asian tradition, from what [livejournal.com profile] cougarfang said (http://community.livejournal.com/saiyuki/311104.html?thread=2356800#t2356800), agree that time down passes faster than time up. Also that in the Chinese source it seemingly was their first incarnation.

And of course Tenpou could have kept on reincarnating as someone responsible for killing lots of soldiers. Like y'know Zhuge Liang. Or Cao Cao, even better. ^_^

Hi!

Thank you sosososososososo much for the wonderful translation! That was awesome! *me friends you xD*

And weeeeeh, Kaka´s site is the best! I loved the 2nd picture of this season´s volume... *-* Look at the way Konzen is holding Goku! So sweet! (and tragic, in a way ._.)

You always get my references. ;) But killing in immediate self-defence is one thing, and ordering your followers to wipe them out to the last man (even if it's for their own sakes) is possibly another, and a heavy karmic burden to take on your head.

On the last two remarks: But brainy ain't the same (or fun) as bloody. Tenpou might be a bit of strategist guy up there but Gonou is sure as hell the DIY type. Zhuge Liang/Cao Cao jez' point their fans and somebody else shouts 'Action', you know what I mean =P

My sincerest appreciation to you for sharing the link. ^_^

Wow...just, wow. I am in continual awe of the way Minekura-sensei drew Tenpou's and Kenren's faces here...and the shot of Tenpou's lanky hair spilling over the back of his shoulders, it's as if I could almost reach out and touch it (but I'd probably want to wash it for him first. *grin*)

Adding my voice once again to the chorus of "thank-yous", mjj. Bless your heart. ^_^

Maybe it's just me, but this episode has me both cheering our foursome onwards and gnawing my knuckles in dread. Things have gone fairly well for their "escape" so far (even for Goku) that I just know deep down in my guts that somebody is waiting patiently at the dimensional gate/portal for their arrival. I'm not the betting kind, since I always lose...but my money's on Nataku. (And I don't think he'll be holding a fruit basket.)

Last time *I* post before the RFB version comes out, then.

(I'll admit I was half-thinking about a week or whatever's worth of work piled on the desk when you came back and wondering just how much that might delay things.)
