The grave gives up its secrets and the sea gives up its dead sooner than Gunma PO gives up the packages entrusted to it. Nonetheless someone seems to have struck their rod on the ground and commanded the waves, because Tues to Thurs of this week has seen the arrival of
--a package of books with Salty Dog 4, various Koori no Mamono, and the latest Saiyuki ep
--a lone Papuwa episode
--which next day reveals to have been *last* month's Papuwa ep because this is this month's, plus FMA; and
--five count 'em five packages of batteries. [livejournal.com profile] shiny_monkey, I'm assuming you didn't in fact send those all at the same time? No, I thought not.
My extreme gratitude for all of this.

Meanwhile I chug merrily into The Paths of the Dead. It's refreshing to see Morrolan, free of Vlad's colloquialism, displaying the semi-doltish comprehension skills that Paarfi's style imputes to all its subjects. I am also reminded of the Musée d'Orsay.

When the Musée d'Orsay first opened it was noted by the foreign press that the architect of the reconstruction, the museum's first curator and the minister of Culture were all women, and that this fact was not considered worthy of note in France. Precisely. In Brust the main warlord, the warlord's successor, the demon whom the gods are sending to aid these two, the hidden heir to the throne, and the other possible heir whose existence may cause complications, are all female; and this fact is not considered worthy of note by the personages and Beings involved. (Paarfi's style OTOH is catching.)

He rather prays, you will be pleased to see,
One such today, as other plays should be,

as Ben Jonson said once and I was required to memorize.

And all this is from someone who- shinjirarenai- lives in Las Vegas. Ah well. I'm just grateful for a world where the stereotypes simply... don't function.

Mmmm Morrolan...
*cough* Right, there is that love of narcissistic guys again.
Except, you know, he's so full of himself but justifiably so!
=D

I'll reserve judgment on that until I get through the next two books. Vlad's POV doesn't make him look terribly wonderful to me. In fact there seems to be a whole bunch of unfortunate traits that Morrolan and Vlad have in common- impatience, temper, not stopping to think, a large dollop of childishness. Not my personal ideal, in any case.

Though I'm impressed that you can observe swoon-worthy elements in him through the unaccommodating veil of Brust's prose. Brust isn't trying to make any of his male characters (at least; and I rather fancy not the female ones either) into... well, what they'd be if a woman writer or even better a mangaka was doing them. Swoon-worthy, one way or the other.

Hm, traits that bug me about Morrolan seem more connected to his being of house Dragon than personal traits? I don't know HOW Vlad deals with Dragons. XD You're definitely on the money with the bad traits, but I forgive them because it is entertaining to read. I could see myself dating someone like Morrolan; you just need to bear in mind it is a fling and will never amount to anything! *cough* I've dated ego before and have enjoyed the company but it has never been serious or long-term. (My taste used to run more towards body builders... great to have hanging off your arm but lousy conversations for the most part.) This one dot-com millionaire was so full of himself I thought he'd burst but at the same time he knew some interesting people and I really do find ego and narcissism entertaining.
Of course, I'd never EVER let one latch onto me for very long?

Brust's stories are way more plot-driven than character-driven and I think that is why it is more difficult? *couogh* Hasn't stopped me from writing slashy fanfiction of it?

Slashy fanfic? Crikey. Who and who? Vlad and Kragar? (I'm seeing hints of Pel and Aerith, finally.)

[identity profile] tammylee.livejournal.com 2006-04-15 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
Pel and Aerith. ^_^
I could see Morrolan in a slashfic but only if he were pitching. Just becuase Verra is the only woman for him (there is that ego again) doesn't mean there can't be various men strung along for his pleasure?

Ahh Kragar... I've seen him slashed with the Hawklord dude, the telepathic one whose name escapes me right now. XD After all, it is mentioned that Kragar has known him for a while before he brings him in to help Vlad?

Daymar? And uhh seen where? The Pit?
