ETA: Ha! So that's what the invert function is in photoshop. Look here to see inverted Tenpou and inverted Kenren. And Kanzeon being uhh well Kanzeon, from the back pages of vol 2.

FWIW the Kenren frontispiece is the same in both editions of Gaiden 1, just has thinner lines in the new version. The colour pages that start the book have more colour in them- Nataku appears against a blood red background- and a tendency to the browns she's shown so much love of in her art books. Goujun now looks like yellow ivory, Kanzeon is yellow-brown rather than peach. I'm not quite the fan of it myself.

Have my new Gaidens courtesy of shiny_monkey. If I may ask the Chinese here present about this picture-- I looked at it and said Zhuge Liang and then said no wait didn't he have a horsetail fan? So who's Tenpou being in this pic?

Actually, that's the usual costume for Zhuge Liang, that I've seen. I'm not sure who Kenren was supposed to be in the last volume, though.

Hm, I looked at your inverted picture and googled around a bit - looks like she dressed him as standard Zhuge Liang.

Here's the Dynasty Warriors version, I believe. Tenpou's missing the detail on his robes at the shoulders, most noticeably.

Yes he does feel right. His frontispiece outfit isn't his Dynasty Warriors one (which see (http://www.yueying.net/dw/?page=profiles.shu.zhao_yun)) but the write up- ha!

Does "new gaidens" mean that those two volumes? If yes, what's in the second one? How does the first one differ from the one that had already been out? This has been confusing me.

There's a run-through here (http://community.livejournal.com/saiyuki/240279.html?style=mine) with scans. Vol 1 has new back and front covers, new version I think of soldier Kenren in b&w frontispiece, coupla new colour plates. Vol 2 is all the eps that were published in GFantasy and the ones in Zero Sum- basically, the photocopies I'd sent you- plus some new colour pieces etc etc.

The latest two eps were published in Ward, so I guess we'll have an all-WArd tank as no.3. I'm cautiously encouraged because she needs a good four or five more eps to make a decent tank. So maybe things won't end completely next installment.

That costume for Zhuge Liang is directly zipped from one of ZL's costumes in the Romance of 3-based video game series 'Dynasty Warriors'. Do we know Minekura is a gamer? Oh yes we do.

That's the one. Also has the suspiciously close friendship between Zhuge Liang, the military genius (with, google tells me, his trademark *feather* fan) and his king Liu Bei. The Chinese don't see this cause they don't want to see this cause those guys had beards yuck; but the mind that way inclined... will be inclined that way.

She was being arteestic. Or her editors were. Chapter end pages in black with white script: ghostly, fantastic, maybe a bit ominous. It does work actually- instead of just 'Oh A/U Kenren' it's Oh that classical Chinese soldier is *Kenren*!

I wonder why it never occurred to me to try that trick in photoshop. The details of the Kenren one have been bugging me for years.

But y'know, if you have the proper loose Tenpou hair wave and possibly glasses, no-one would think Dynasty Warriors ever. ^_^

You have English-language Photoshop, yes? Have fun with just trying everything. That's how I learned to use it in Japanese ^^; I don't know what the kanji say, but I know that certain strings of kanji mean to do certain strings, is how I keep my job -_-;;
