I shall mention that I watched Advent Children tonight in an odd stop-and-go DVD with English and Swedish subtitles. All I know of FF7 comes from translating djs lo these many years ago. (So many years ago that I feel quite nostalgic about it now.) This is a good thing because, as I discovered while googling for extra info without which the film is just a tad obscure, yes? the original graphics for the game are little short of giggle-worthy. The unsettling eerieness of AC's look is still preferable to these cute chibi guys in their brite colours.

Also no-one commenting on Gojou's five most lovable traits mentions that he reads on the john, but we actually have Minekura's word for that.

Also my mouse has gotten quite genki all of a sudden and overhighlights whenever I highlight. I have dark suspicions that this is somehow linked to the computer having arbitrarily decided that it will once again turn off screen and hard drive after 30 minutes as instructed. It used to, then it stopped, now it does again. HAL approaches sentience. Tremble.

Soooo, you have succumbed and watched FFVII:AC. Now it will eat -your- brain, too. What a pity.

It will? But there's nowhere to go with it. The game has those funny graphics. The doujinshi are by the numbers. And the video itself had more WTFery than Evangelion, to say nothing of tedious motorcycle chases and waving about of ridiculously unwieldy swords. ("No, no! You don't *understand*! That was Sephiroth's final power break!!!" And other reasons why I'm not a gamer.)

It's pretty, but I don't care enough about any of these guys to pursue it. Translating doujinshi can make you immune that way.

I've never seen the game, y'know. Or any game, for that matter aside from watching a few rounds of Doom over the brother's shoulder and finding it somewhere over and beyond the pale of boredom.

However.

It goes like this. You're sitting there in the middle of the night working away at something utterly unrelated then, out of NOWHERE you think, "Cloud is very sulky and pretty." Then, later, you think, "Also, Sephiroth has a sexy voice."

Next thing you know, you're hauling it out again to fast forward to the good parts. It's like a disease. (All very thrilling for the Conrad/Yuuri 'shipper in me as well.)

Anyway, there was an anime called "Last Order" that was released at the same time, I believe. It goes with (sort of).

I suppose it's a good thing then that the DVD was a rental. Also that the stuttering soundtrack was so annoying that I don't really remember any good parts. (Cloud is sulky and Sephiroth is wimpy and together they become uke x uke ie nothing happens.)

I suppose if I have a weakness it's Rufus, but self-respect will not allow me to have a weakness for Rufus. Besides, I have a dj-induced conviction that the man is actually a pudge in a suit.

I saw it at Yaoicon (coughs, hangs head). I admit I now see why so many people are pro-Sephiroth.

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2006-01-14 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
What I got from it is why so many djka made Sephiroth uke. Onscreen for maybe ten minutes and all of them screaming Vulnerability!!

Admittedly skintight black leather hardly gets you off to a standing start.

(sigh) Advent Children is, IMO, just a way for SQEN to say "Look what we can do now!" Because of course when it was released, Final Fantasy VII, with its freaky polygons and bright colours, was quite exciting and a whole lot of fun and wow, did you see that full-motion part when -- ? Sephiroth turning and smiling over his shoulder at Cloud through the flames of his hometown that wasn't -- Cloud lowering Aerith into the water was a heartbreaking moment when we knew the world was doomed -- these scenes were exciting and beautiful at the time.

But if you don't play video games as a rule, then the effect is much lessened, I think, when you see a movie made based on a small part of one game in a series of games.

And also IMO, I hate when companies like SQEN decide they've got to show you how much better they can do it now, which is the only reason they did AC. Well, that, and the money off the idiotic merchandising.

(also also -- Sephiroth had to be uke from the start. A) he was subject to it being lower-ranked than anyone in the company B) he was subject to it being prettier and smaller than anyone he'd have sex with in the military C) leather pants (saw a funny dj about the straps over his chest and what they signified, but I digress) and D) serious mama-fechi)

But if I have this right, FFVII didn't have voice actors, yes? So AC had the laudable effect of giving the characters voices. Besides, if I were a mad fan of FFVII and attached to the characters, I think it'd get up my nose that the only way to have more of them would be via KH with Mickey and Goofy and Donald Duck thrown in.

[identity profile] shiny-monkey.livejournal.com 2006-01-14 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I would rather peel off all my skin and roll around in salt, than play Kingdom Hearts just to have a chance at any Final Fantasy characters, even as cute as Sora might be, simply because Donald and Goofy and ultimately "King Mickey" are in it. So I plead ignorance in that case.

[identity profile] shiny-monkey.livejournal.com 2006-01-14 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Er -- except that, yes, there was no voice acting in Final Fantasy until FFX, which was the first one for the PS2.

It's not as awful as I thought it would be, as the Squaresoft characters used in the main plotline stay almost entirely within non-Disney worlds. IIRC the only crossover between Square characters and Disney settings happens in the Hercules Coliseum, and there you're just fighting them (and fighting Cloud and Sephiroth has a sort of tunnel effect of diminishing one's awareness that your comrades in arms are beings that resemble Goofy and Donald XD). It's really not as shocking to the system as it probably ought to be. XD;;

[livejournal.com profile] shiny_monkey's right though: King Mickey is a crime against nature. XD

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2006-01-15 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
For the RPH virgin, who or what is King Mickey?

[identity profile] luxetumbra.livejournal.com 2006-01-15 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
He starts off the non-Sora plotline in KH1 and then thankfully disappears for the remainder of the game. Unfortunately he's back in a major (http://www.kh2.co.uk/image.php?view=kh2/images/img178.jpg) way (http://www.kh2.co.uk/image.php?view=kh2/images/d39.png) in the 2nd game. I haven't seen him in any shots with the FFVII guys though, so hopefully Squeenix was merciful to those of us who are only playing for the FF matchups.

Why they had to ruin a perfectly good FF game by sticking in Disney characters, grumble, grumble....

Would you like a copy of Last Order? Does a good job of explaining Cloud's emo-ness. And there are Turks! :D

[identity profile] luxetumbra.livejournal.com 2006-01-15 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Bleah, that should have been

"He starts off the non-Sora plotline in KH1 by disappearing, leaving behind a note dispatching Donald and Goofy on a mission to locate the Keymaster (Sora) since all the various Disney worlds are somehow vanishing."

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2006-01-16 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
since all the various Disney worlds are somehow vanishing

You aren't allowed to say 'good' and go play another part of the game? ^_^

Thanks for the Last Order offer but I have Win98 and a limit to what I can play. (Turks? Rude and Reno and them-all? The slapstick comedy duo? I uhh didn't quite see the appeal of Rude and Reno from watching AC, I must say.)

[identity profile] luxetumbra.livejournal.com 2006-01-16 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
Heheheh, suprisingly though, it's not a bad game. Once you get over the shock of playing next to Disney characters, that is. ^_^;;

I have a copy of the Advent Pieces dvd containing all the extras, of which one is the Last Order OVA. It does play on my standalone dvd player, so if you wanted to see if it might play on yours, I'll be happy to send it to you.

The Turks are much more powerful in the game, so I think part of the appeal of seeing them in the movie is that they're so wimpy in comparison to everyone else (yet they still retain that "we're badass" vibe). XD

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2006-01-14 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
To add- Sephiroth can't be shorter than Cloud but I swear I've read Cloud x Sephiroth.

[identity profile] shiny-monkey.livejournal.com 2006-01-14 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
But Cloud doesn't have mother issues so he gets to be on top. There are so many issues with Sephiroth that he doesn't have a chance.

I'm sure it's some kind of pirate, for all that the cover looked perfectly pro. The Swedish subtitles are sort of a giveaway.
