Someone was remarking in her lj
Times change, but if it is possible for a country to reincarnate through millennia with the same soul, China is it
which is true, but I'm not sure it isn't true of everyone. As I dimly recall the French cleric from the early Middle Ages before there actually was a France who argued passionately that though angels are bodiless still they must eat because no-one can live in the perfect bliss of the Divine Light without eating. "And if they cannot eat the gross food of this earth I am convinced they eat each other, purely for the pleasure of it" which in this day and age is distinct don't-go-there territory.

I wish I could. The trouble with what [livejournal.com profile] incandescens calls fly-paper memory is that a quote will stick almost verbatim with no context at all. I can't remember where I read it; worse, I can't even think where I might have read it. I'm pretty sure about the 'I am convinced they eat each other' part, but google gives me no help using any of those. Of course, if the quote ever shows up, it will probably be completely different from what I remember.

well, damnit!

although, dear god, some of the stuff that google punts back using variations of that search string is fairly disturbing.

Ah. Yes. Plugging 'eat each other' into google does indeed do it.
