A look at the ads in back of Kaze no Umi etc suggest that the Answers *aren't* in Kaze no Umi etc. but in three or four other volumes. [livejournal.com profile] shiny_monkey will be given a wad of yen and a list of obscure titles to be looking for when she goes back to Japan.

And I shall interlard my kirin reading with more Konron no Tama, just because. Mh well, just because to date the 12K novels have added nothing to the anime.

There's an article waiting to be written about how anime is to manga & shousetsu as dramatizations are to novels ie people don't *really* start writing a work until they hear it speak and see it move. Then suddenly anyone can do it- and does. The characters in text get a visible body; the characters in manga acquire colour and voices. Half the writer's work is done for you. Is why it's a lot easier to write LotR stories after the films and FMA yaoi after the anime. In fact some day I shall natter at [livejournal.com profile] tanbi about how manga-based FMA yaoi barely seems possible. (Ed and Roy *don't* look cute together there and the women are too interesting to be ignored as prospective partners.)

I would posit that for me at least, FMA-anime-based yaoi is barely possible itself. On the rare occasion, I'll linger over HughesxRoy, but otherwise I'm perfectly happy with the anime intimation of Roy and Riza, Hughes and Gracia or Al and Winry (we'll have to set aside the movie, though that gives us a sweet dosage of what could've been for Scar).

Then I suppose it must be that genre of 'sheer willpower' yaoi- I *will* slash these guys I will I will I will!

I haven't seen much of the anime but in everyone's icons Ed looks pretty good. There *must* be something you could do with him... but his only SO is a suit of armour.

Anime Ed has secured a nice toasty place for me in the afterlife. He's physically more attractive than any 15 year old has a right to be. But yes, Al's a suit of armor (and I just can't find it in me for incest 99% of the time, anyhow) and RoyxEd just doesn't appeal on any level to me, at least (perhaps because I see Roy as a father figure and that hints at the whole incest thing again). Thus I boggle that FMA has had such a huge slice of the Comiket real estate for the last couple of years. I just don't get it.

Japanese yaoi is-- I won't say all, but 98% about teh pretteh. IME the characters are then, often as not, slotted into the dramatic and sexual role that's closest to them. The guys with Issues become rape fodder and weep a lot. The guys without become semes. Height Rule notwithstanding, almost anyone's eligible for the role of raping uke or weeping seme if the djka feels like it.

In amongst all this, some people are actually writing about the characters. Can drive a western fan nuts. But after all, it's not our ball game.

(I of course am all about the incest, but the mechanics of it are the problem for me.)

I'll linger over HughesxRoy

Speaking of which, have you seen (http://www.livejournal.com/users/zalia/106037.html) this (http://www.livejournal.com/users/zalia/106425.html)? *_*

Eeenteresting. I really only collect Kodaka's HughesxRoy, so I haven't much of seen anything else.
