I have a new hard drive with the same old Win98, but for some reason all the sizes are different-- smaller-- even at my old resolution. And much uglier. And the buttons on IE are all in the wrong place. This is very off-putting. I feel like a cat when all the furniture is moved. And my OE has no addresses in its address book and it can't access my server and it displays messages in irritating Times New Roman even though it says the default is Arial and my IE favourites did *not* get transferred to the new Netscape no matter what Netscape says about it being automatic-- but that's actually OK because the new IE remembers passwords finally so I don't need Netscape nyah nyah nyah.

But I'm feeling all sniffly and lonely now for my old Win95 system. I knew where I was with that one and I wrote some good stuff on it. The good old days, that was.

ETA: jesus christ on a cracker. All the stories in my directory now display on a grey page except the ones I hand-coded myself. WTF????

The grey page with black text is the old Mosaic default for browsers, way back in about 1990. Most likely, you don't have default preferences set somewhere and the page has not defined styles, so it's falling back on the defaults programmed into the software. Exactly how IE handles that I don't know, and I don't know if it varies from version to version. You might look under Tools->Internet Options, or use IEs help and search on 'accessibility features'.

Or look under Colors, where you can see that the default is indeed black text on grey background if nothing else is specified. For most pages, you won't see grey background because most people now days hard code a background color on their pages.

Thank you. That cleared it up. One problem out of the way. Now about these fonts...

I'm more concerned about your OE password not functioning. Unless you've gotten it to do so in the meantime.

Cleared up. A little detail they put in a ways back I'd forgotten about- under name they want the complete emaill address, not just the user name.

Did you get the font thing cleared up? If not, I'll look at it tonight.

I got the OE fonts cleared up, and the addresses. Still can't get my IE favourites into Netscape. They're in Firefox but that browser has the most user-unfriendly manage bookmarks program I've ever met.

Changing stuff in IE has helped the presentation problem, but my bro says the bottom line is that it's my low resolution that makes all the fonts look ugly. I don't see that going to 800x600 improves things terribly, so the next step seems to be finding a good used graphics monitor that *isn't* a flatscreen, because nothing recent will support my favoured res. Ah well. I may break my time-wasting habits of browsing ljs if the ljs all stay as unreadable as they currently are. Which is to the good.
