Googling 'beeping sound in basement' I find someone with exactly my problem: a beep coming from the ducts:

We just moved in last week. This morning we started hearing a sound from the basement. It's a single beep, every 15 seconds. I can't pinpoint the spot, but I'm sure it's up in the ceiling somewhere. It's a 3 year old house, so everything is relatively new. Any ideas what it could be?

And after much advice, the conclusion:

Found the beep. As stupid as this sounds......it was a carbon monoxide detector from our previous house that was still packed away. The box it was in was directly under the spot where I was looking in the ceiling. Funny thing is, last night my Dad and brother were trying to figure it out. All of us swore it was up in the vents as well. Feel stupid and relieved at the same time.

I think s-i-l went through all the stuff on the shelf, but evidently I should do it again. Meanwhile, have bought earplugs.

(Though in Weird Occurrence flow, yesterday my tablet changed the date, and also decided that I live in some small town in Quebec. Took awhile to convince Google otherwise, esp as I couldn't find the locator in google apps.)

I remember when the detector in my apartment started doing the end-of-battery bleep. I had no idea what was going on - hadn't had to cope with that problem before - and it took a while to work out where the irregular bleep was coming from (the ceiling of the entrance area), let alone how to change it. A most annoying noise.

A sound to drive one mad. One of a whole slew of mod cons no one tells you how to deal with when they go wrong. Fuses. Furnace filters. Fire alarms. My *brother* knows all about them, and wiring, because my father showed him. No one told me until the kitchen went dark, the furnace didn't heat, and there was this damnable beeping sound in the apartment.

Yes, exactly. I had no clue what it was - and I couldn't even identify where it was coming from until it was frequent enough to be extremely annoying. (Luckily there was a bit of information about it on the flat's documentation which I got when I moved in, and googling supplied the rest.)

Going through a huge load of stuff in boxes on your own sounds wearing (and cold? in the basement?). Not the most fun weekend activity.

Furnace is in the basement, so no, not cold. And not so many boxes either once I knew not to be fooled by acoustics. Easy to find and shut off.

Except this morning it was beeping again, vainly telling me to change the battery because evidently plug-in units still have batteries. Removed battery and peace returns.
