So, as John M. Ford's books are coming back into print, I will stash Petronia's classic quote here so as to have it handy for future reference. She was of course responding to my bewilderment at The Dragon Waiting, a full ten years ago:

I've never read John M. Ford's books, but I've always had the impression he was one of those writers who - I was going to write "don't really expect readers to 'get it'", but a more accurate characterization is probably "habitually overshoot the level of subtlety required to avoid cheesy obviousness".

yes I saw the news of the impending releases as well. I'm pretty sure I've read the Star Trek ones (because Star Trek) , and may chanced upon some others once upon a long ago but never stuck in mind. Back in the day when I didn't have friends at school and practically lived in the library.

Still I look forward to reading what I think I may have missed or what my brain did not register.

All my Fords but one are gifts from Incandescens, and they include the Star Trek novels that made TPTB go 'ok you can't do this' to other writers. Fun times.

I hear there's a webpage somewhere that explains all the head-hurty bits of The Dragon Waiting. Shall look for it if I do a reread.
