flemmings: (hasui rain)
My nursing friend was going to come by for a visit but her son got sick and couldn't go to daycare. I was already uncertain about the advisability of this because they were calling for freezing rain this morning. I got up earlier than usual to be ready for her and went out to check the state of the world. My steps and walk seemed ok, but they'd had melter on them for days. The letter carrier was just coming up to next door and I asked if the sidewalks were slippery and she gave a definite yes. So scattered melter on them-- I'm not sure if it *does* melt, actually; maybe it just provides traction-- then went inside and got A's text message. So that was the day. Temps rose, rain started, I stayed indoors.

The root veg stew I made in the crockpot last week was a little thin, so I added a come-by-chance pork tenderloin that was on sale, and then it was hearty and nourishing and filling and all like that. So I did it again today: pork and a bunch of those cheap veg I normally have no use for like turnips and parsnips and golden beets and yes, even carrots. Roast veg gives me indigestion: my system takes exception to anything but the tiniest amount of olive oil. But veg that's stewed for hours in apple cider and bouillon is perfectly digestible, and even more, doesn't taste like veg. Whether this works with other kinds of meat is up for debate. Pork is not the best meat healthwise, but chicken has its own taste and stewing beef, if you buy ethical beef, is expensive and heavy.  I wonder how this would work with tofu or lentils. Discovered that Loblaws, however unsatisfactory in many ways, has a million seasonings one can use to flavour the flavourless: beef souvlaki or beef stew or gyros. Shall experiment in the winter days to come.
