Friday, April 22nd, 2022 06:13 pmThe uncertain time of year, as in 'to heat or not to heat'. Is a high of 10C/ 50F too warm for the furnace? If it's 12C when I go to bed but forecast to drop to 5, what do I set the thermostat at? And of course that newly weird thing where the house is too hot while the furnace is actually on but cools to 'need a sweater' within 10 minutes of it turning off, while the thermostat insists it's over 20C.
I left my green bin turned upside down in the front yard after the early pickup yesterday because it had rained between 9 and 11 and of course there was brown soupy guck in it from, probably, thawing veg leaking out of flimsy recyclable bags. (I freeze my green garbage because otherwise I can smell it no matter whatever container I keep it in. Can't stash container outside either because raccoons can open anything that doesn't lock and occasionally things that do.) So Signora down the street comes and puts it back by the porch, then grabs a broom and sweeps all the twigs from the front path. I am a terrible disappointment to my Italian neighbours, what few of them remain. So I dump the remaining cup of wine from the bottle I have- can't drink in the allergy season- and give her that for her wine-making stash. Unfortunately she doesn't want the plastic bottles that fortified wine comes in because I have many many, and the little Chinese grandmothers who recycle them for pin money don't seem to want them either.
