It's understandable but futile to want things to be different from the same old same old of the last ten years, and then when change happens, to want to be back in the safe rut again. Painless change isn't something I do, evidently: take away the raw dissatisfaction and I revert to comfort as a reflex.

I contemplate this on the anniversary of my return to Japan in 1991, the beginning of an intense period of discomfort that in less than six months turned to old-hand familiarity and ease.
