Bloody but unbowed
Tuesday, August 19th, 2014 10:11 pmOne of Those Weeks at work. (I shall be dead or retired before the end of August ceases to produce Those Weeks.) Am rereading Shibata Ami's Channel 5-- manly space adventure with an admiring afterword by Leiji Matsumoto-- in pure mid-90s nostalgia wallow. Also to remind myself how well Shibata does manly love, hitting all the resonant notes of deep attachment and manly tears. I suspect that sentimentality is as congenial to the Japanese psyche as cute is, and that both are acceptable in a way they aren't here.
In pursuit of a plot bunny, found myself cornering one of the parents and grilling her on classical Persian poetry. Thus the perks of my job; thus also the madness of August.
