The Geography of the House

Or rather, the heating system. Which is so constructed that somehow, no matter what mummified rat's presence may be detectable at the bottom of a shaft when the furnace is off, the smell does not carry when hot air is being blown out through that vent. Roll on the cold weather!

Though for some reason this doesn't apply to the mud room, which stinks when the air's blowing. Fortunately I can block the vents there with heat gain to the rest of the house.

Two benefits in one! It makes me want to map your vents to see how they all interconnect!

I imagine they're screwed up beyond belief, since the previous owner built the mud room extension himself, and badly, and doubtless jury-rigged the heating as well. I know for a fact that he cut through a joist in the kitchen floor to do something or other in that area, which gave my workman conniptions thirty years ago when he uncovered it.
