RIP

Ratso has had the bad taste to die before the exterminator could get him. Exterminator came Wednesday. Thursday morning the unmistakable odour of dead rodent was coming up the back air shaft. Far too fast for a beast that I was assured would take days to take the bait, being the wily critter it is. Have blocked up the vents between bathroom and study and thanked providence for warm weather that lets me keep windows open. I can still smell the acrid tang, but then I'm me. A few more days, judging by the Little Girls' experience with two successive gerbils that escaped into their air duct.

And bought a ceramic heating fan for Sunday, when the temps drop to 5 overnight, if the smell isn't gone by then.

Ours uses snap traps, quick deaths in easily accessible locations, and then they can be collected up as trash because they don't have the chance to move to an inaccessible location. If left to rot, they stink, and also provide a breeding ground for carrion flys. I'm actually more freaked out by the flys in some ways!

I've heard it's a long process to get the rats to take bait from traps. Not sure many downtown companies use them, for that reason; and because rats here are a constant problem, so they want them eliminated quickly. Shall hope my rat mummifies in his sealed up vent.

Have ordered supposed to work well dead animal odour eliminator, but fancy in the end I'll have to have the vents cleaned out,

Shall, if it arrives. Fedex is unreliable up here.
