Facebook helpfully reminds me that the vacant house report has to be filed every year. My house isn't vacant but I have to tell the city that or they'll bill me for it. New tax on vacant residences people buy as investments but won't rent, in hopes of incentivizing them to do so. Simple enough to do online, especially with my new tax bill just arrived and tucked into the study lamp. (Don't ask.) So my assessment roll number and all is handy. Yes this is my principal residence and yes I've lived here six months out of twelve and how lucky they didn't do this thirty years ago when I didn't. Done and dusted.
Then make the mistake of reading the comments on the FB post. Oh the howls of rage! We're living in a communist regime where the guvvmint is telling us what to do with our property! It's because the guvvmint is bringing in all these furrners and giving them OUR money and parking them in OUR houses and that leftist Mayor Chow is to blame for it all, ignoring the fact that this program started under Mayor Tory the Tory. TO is not an oasis of left-wing liberalism however much one wants to believe it is: or maybe the howlers live in the 'burbs that once governed themselves until a red-neck Conservative government decided to amalgamate all the burbs into a mega-city in order to water down the leftist tendencies of Toronto the city proper.
