The first time I ever had Vietnamese food was in France in 1981, when I was bicycling from Toulouse to points east. I can't remember where I had it or what it was but it was stunningly delicious. So when I got home I went to a Vietnamese restaurant here. Again, I don't remember what I ordered but what I got was a cold chicken leg and thigh and a spoon to eat it with. And no, I have no idea what that was supposed to be and why they didn't give me proper cutlery.

Anyway that was all decades ago and now the Vietnamese restaurants offer you either banh mi or vermicelli and I'm perfectly happy with both. Because today was a water pill day when I can't leave the house I ordered in from the excellent place in the Duff Mall. Their banh mi is better than the end of the street guys, and their shrimp rolls are great. But they do so love their saran wrap. The shrimp rolls come individually wrapped and then the two rolls get wrapped together, and getting the cling film off the sticky rice wrap is an exercise in frustration. So I passed on the rolls and got two banh mi instead: and would have eaten both but restrained myself. Bread, I crave bread, and banh mi provides that in abundance. I will eventually go back to salad and protein but for the moment, or the next few days, bread is where it's at.
