I'd said to myself that *this* was the year I'd finally take that rail tour to Vermont to see the fall colours; so tonight I went online and started googling. Seriously, a few days on a train in New England + fare to Boston costs more than a low season plane to Tokyo-- which I began considering yesterday in a G&T-inspired fit of The Me I Used To Be. True, I wouldn't be flying low season unless I left before Dec 15 and came back after January 4: the fare jump between Dec 15th and Dec 16th is almost $300. Then again, it's either over $250 to leave a week later or well over $250 for a week's hotel in Tokyo, never mind food.

Oh, decisions, decisions. Somehow a train trip seems less fraught...

Now there's a thought. But when does WVa have their fall colours, and when would you be free?

(Was shocked that VT was doing tours first week in October. Things haven't even thought of turning then, here in Toronto. Mid-month always, and sometimes not even then.)

late october, i think, west virginia will be in the mountians, so it's not that late. I will do some research - we can probably stay in my mom's place in virginia, and then it's a couple hours of drive to some of the trains.

Late October is also when the pregnant staff is intending to start her maternity leave. Let's research, but possibly this will be a 'next year when I'm retired' thing. Do I need a flight to Washington or somewhere smaller/ closer?

amazingly enough the west virginia website claims that peak is early october! there are two trains within 2 hrs drive from my mom's place in virginia. Look up cass railroad wv, and also cumberland maryland train. flying to dc is probably the best bet and cheapest. I can pick u up and we can spend a couple days in my place and dc area museums, and then drive to my mom's place and spend a couples days there over the weekend, as the trains run mostly on weekends.
