Because everything exists on the internet, somewhere there must be a Patrick O'Brian concordance with explanations of all those nautical terms, and in time I shall go looking for it. For now, I rest bemused by the fact that 'cracking on with all sneer' is, evidently, not a typo.

I'm also encouraged by the fact that the book I'm reading now was written when he was rising eighty, in longhand, reputedly with a quill pen. There's an example for the ages.

in longhand, reputedly with a quill pen - makes me lament the demise of my lovely Waterman fountain pen. I used to have a really nice hand now it resembles chicken scratchings. *sigh* a sign of the times indeed.
