xsmoonshine sent me a buncha DVDs. To my sorrow, my cranky region 1 DVD player wouldn't touch the Chinese opera version of Dream of the Red Chamber. But now I have a computer that will play DVDs and I'm not afraid to use it, so I put Red Chambers in last night to have a look, intending to send it off to mvrdrk this morning.
Good thing. Because 'woman in male period clothes' evidently does not automatically translate to Yue or Shanghai or whichever opera; it translates to Brigitte Lin playing Bao Yu. Nice to see the clothes and furnishings and whatever that these people are supposed to be wearing and using. That said, Brigitte Lin or no, Bao Yu is still a horrid little boy and makes for painful watching.
