Went next door and asked them to demonstrate the marvels of ipod. After demonstration, think a nice uncomplicated mp3 player is much more what I need.

Then spent another coupla heart-breaking hours trying to get my Woxin AU collected in one place without random lines that *no* I did not put there myself and that *no* are not borders. This involves pasting lj entries into Wordpad so the html frames/ boxes/ whatever vanish. I dislike Wordpad because you can't change the default Times New Roman font, and when you go to change it to Courier New it gives you a list of fonts from here to Siberia. Then I c&p into OpenOffice, which I dislike because its spacing is wonky between paragraphs and it wants to save everything in its own file extension instead of .rtf. Look at the resulting product in Word 2003, which renders everything into caps. Hate hate hate.

I want my Word 2000 back. *It* never reproduced frames and boxes; I could ctr-c ctr-v from a webpage and get nothing but the text. *It* had no trouble rendering 13 pt Courier. I want my old 14" monitor back. *It* was perfectly happy with 800x600. *It* never made me squint to read great swathes of text so that now my head hurts. I could write on that monitor.

Fooey.

Suggestion - I believe there is a "Paste Special" option from the (Edit?) menu in Word 2003. If I'm remembering correctly, it should give you an option to paste as text only.

Alternately, if you right-click in a doc, I think it might give you the paste special/paste as text from the pop-up menu.

I know in Outhouselook that when you paste something in, it pops up a little icon of a ... it's like a little arrow thing I think, and offers you the choice to keep formatting, keep text only, or something else. But I can't remember if Word offers the same.

Thank you. A little playing about with OO reveals that yes, there's a 'paste special' option in the edit menu, and you press and select your style before you press ctl-v. 'Unformatted' keeps the box; formatted-rtf gets you text only; while any version of html in OO is a thing of horror. Right-clicking the doc doesn't give you paste special options, alas.

Annoying as OO is, it beats the horror of Word 2003.

woo! It took me far too long of using Word to ever be brave enough to try Paste Special -- it always sounded counter-intuitive to me. I just wanted a "paste plain" option. :p Glad it works in OO too.

a tiny little icon shows up near the end of where you pasted.

No icons in OO; I'm not opening Word to find out, but I'm sure it's there.

So what do you write on in Ubuntu-wasn't-it?

I love my little Sansa. No need for ipods in my book.
