Not a dog person but--

Oh wow. That's not a dog, it's a Wookie. If one only had the space...

"Essig, a dog breeder and seller from Leonberg in southwestern Germany, originally bred the Leonberger from the Newfoundland (the Landseer type, with black/white marks), Saint Bernard, and Pyrenean Mountain Dog"

Ah, the Grand Pyrenees. I saw them in, oddly, the Pyrenees when I was bike touring in Spain- or rather, in the subsidiary chain of 'mountains' (soi-disant: a Canadian has trouble with European definitions of same) from Burgos to Leon. They look like snowbanks lying across the road. A guy came into my bank once with one, high as his waist and five feet long. We got to talking. "I heard a noise one night but knew I could take my time getting downstairs to check it out. Sure enough-- this guy was pressed against the wall, and Daisy here was just leaning on him."

Good god.

Gives me a whole new visual reference for lion dogs.

I would love to have a dog like that! Provided I had a good outdoors space for him. I'd suspect they rather like cooler weather, what with all that fur.
*wants to rough up his mane-like ruff!*

My neighbor had a whole series of those. Lovely dogs, but so much shedding! They don't need that much space or exercise, unlike the much smaller border collie, for example.

My, that is a pretty dog. I think I'd want to keep my hands buried in the fur at all times.

is it the dogs or the European definitions of mountains that look like snowbanks lying across the road?)

The dogs. They go on forever.

The wiki article does rather walk around the fact that that's an awful lot of dog there.

Thanks! I hope to make Bébé's acquaintance some day soon.

I will believe they shed. I can also believe they don't need that much space. Something that big isn't likely to run madly about chasing its nose.
