Oh, and the other thing whose appeal I don't get? 'Kickass women.'

Maybe it's a Canadian thing. If you have to kick ass you're doing it wrong.

It's a wise person who could kick ass but tries other avenues first to resolve the conflict.

I like the ones whose other avenues /work/ so that aggressive confrontation isn't necessary. For that you may need a different society, because the American default, at least, is 'OK we tried the nice way NOW LET'S KICK BUTT HOORAY!!! cause everyone *knows* the nice way don't work as we just proved again.

It all comes down to WWVD- what would Vetinari do?

I have always believed in the power of charm a smile and politeness. Has never failed me so far. [Although peoples' idiocy have often made me feel like wanting to do violence to a wall or something!]

I don't think I *KNOW* how to kick ass. It's not something inherent in me I don't think. My two younger sisters have learnt it from somewhere since but I have never quite grasped whatever basic rules there are.

The basic rule of kicking ass seems to be to disregard all normal rules of civil conduct and bash the other guy, verbally or with a large stick. I'm not fond of either option. (Also not fond of fictional situations that set up The Other Guy who is of course violent, sadistic, himself immune to the rules of civil conduct, and a half step up from a slavering animal. Such people exist. They're not the norm, and I find it vaguely offensive that they're presented as a norm so that people can have the violent thrill of bashing them.)

I always thought the 'kick ass woman' was a male fantasy construct. Are you saying it's not?

I see a huge number of female fans who've embraced the concept whole hog, including using the word as a reflex term of praise and complaining loudly when an anime character fails to be kickass enough, or (horrors) at all.

thank you. i have thought the same for a long time.

I think the term has slipped to mean an energetic person who gets things done, rather than someone who sees violence as the first and only solution.
