Via worldserpent's entry, a page of kirie, paper cut illustrations. Which cradle Catholic me will always think of as kyrie, but no matter.

Especially Yashagaike, the yasha in the pond, actually a dragon princess; also the name of the film with Tamasaburo Bando which of course exists nowhere. Demon Pond in English. Here is an interesting if catty account of the making, with pictures finally, and here is a retelling of the original story, with an English translation.

Fascinating and beautiful. I found a version of Yashagaike (http://www.superhappyfun.com/forsale.cfm?whereme=232) that some dedicated fan has ported over to DVD (actually DVD-R, but it should play in most stand-alone DVD players of recent vintage) from VHS. (And it looks like he carries a ton of Shinoda's films. Definitely will be hitting this guy up.)

Your f-list loves you, o master of the google-fu. I am... tempted. But the quality of the photography was fuzzy to start with, and a 'poor' quality DVD from the film- mh. Still, will think about it seriously.

Honestly, if that write-up you found hadn't mentioned that Tamasaburo was an onnagata, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have noticed. ^_^;; Even in the stills, with the makeup on, he looks pretty darn convincing. (And now I'm wondering what Miike's version is like. *tries not to think of "Ichi"*)

Err- yes. Miike and trad kabuki do not match. Perhaps the pond inhabitanmts get sliced up for sashimi.

If you can see Tamasaburo close enough (I have an art book of his photos somewhere, bought in Amsterdam of all places- ahh my rich and misspent 30's) you can tell from the hands and the neck. Otehrwise, well, no.

I note also that lj isn't mailing me comments except from comms I'd rather they didn't.
