Flipping lj has logged me out five times this evening. Screw them.

I was thinking about that panel with Goujun writing his memoirs or whatever they are, and the scar through his eye. Why does post-Apocalypse Goujun only have one eye? And then the obvious answer occurred to me. No, *not* 'somebody took it out with a sword.' Not at all. It's so that he can be a clever historical reference. If you have a dragon (I learned this from Shibata Ami) he must be a one-eyed dragon. What am I talking about? Google 'dokugan ryu' and you'll find out.

...is this a reference to whatsisname, Date Masamune I think it was, the Japanese general?

Am I misremembering, or has Minekura riffed on tv/etc in the Gaiden before? Wasn't there a moment when Kenren made some sort of joke on being (does rapid check) 'Abarenbou Shougun'?

That's him. There are three famous One-eyed Men in Japanese history and he's the most famous. The second-most, Yagyuu Juubei, actually had two eyes but most popular culture these days accepts Meiji fanon that he lost one training as a ninja/ swordsman with his father.

More than once. Vol 1 of Saiyuuki contained an obscure (to me) reference to a commercial. One of the recent Gaidens had Kenren using some early 80's-was-it? celebrity's trademark I'm here! line (Ja-ja-jaan!) when he appeared. I think I translated that as Heeere's Johnny! as being somewhat the same vintage as Johnny Carson.

Okay! I'm going to drop off this completely unrelated to anything note where you might notice it (or not). Fell over a rec discussion over here (http://lazulisong.livejournal.com/604383.html) that includes you, if you're interested in that sort of thing.

Thanks ^_^

Ahh, egoboo. Such sweet crack, even for fics that belong to the Dark Ages of the late 90's. And oh look, slash cotillion now allows comments. I'd actually forgotten the place existed and had a story of mine on it. How terribly nostalgic this all is.
