Oh dear oh dear oh dear oh dear oh dear.

An entry in baka_neko's journal has me gasping weakly on the floor.

I got the Dynasty Warriors 5 in English dub...and, well. I WEEP for Cao Cao. The voice actors all unanimously as one non-Chinese speaking voice actor, pronounced it as "COW-COW". I writhe in pain every time I listen to it.

They introduced some new characters, like Cao Cao's son, Cao Pi.

Just guess how they pronounce it.

Cao Pi carols at his intro: "I am COW PEE, son of COW COW." And he blathers on and on about his great ambition and what have you, but by then we are dying on the floor, clutching at the controller, UTTERLY SLAIN. BY THE GREAT PURPLE COW PEE WIELDING HIS DOUBLE BLADES.

Simple things amuse simple people, yes.

And now you know why I could never finish playing Kessen 3. (It wouldn't be so bad if Koei hasn't in practice created a generation of fanboys who think it is pronounced "cow cow".)

I of course was irresistibly reminded of Calpis. But in pure serendipity, Cao Cao's other name (Meng De is it? Eminent Virtue? and why does he have two names?) was one that cropped up in the 12 Kingdoms Guidebook today, where the novelist remarks that some chara looks like Meng De. I thought Must be Sangokushi something; and it was.
