Phone crashed this afternoon. Figured this was it, wondered if I could get data off it even in crashed mode. Win XP was quite happy to transfer data if I'd insert a blank CD into the drive, which of course I don't have. I belong to the era of floppies. Windows 10 just looked at me blankly, not registering that something had been plugged into it. Thus I spent two hours looking for my acupuncturist's card so I could tell her if I could take the Saturday spot she offered me. (I can't, because her landlord refuses to install a doorbell to the over a store apartment building so you have to call when you arrive to get the front door unlatched.) Couldn't find card, couldn't locate a phone number online, if your phone is gone apparently you're up shit creek.

Then once again phone rose from the dead and rebooted itself. Battery, maybe? Do people replace phone batteries? Must google, with fingers firmly crossed.

Phone batteries do eventually need replacing, yes. At least, my iPhone ones did, so I assume that it's common to the lot of phones.

Yes, most phones can have their battery replaced. If you take it to the brand name store, they may want to replace it with a refurbished one rather than replacing just the battery.

But what about the data on the phone if they give you a refurbished one? Will they transfer it for you?

Depends on the company. Some do, some don't, you'd have to ask, and bring your password for the relevant backup in case they do. You can do it yourself, but what a hassle. That's why I went to a small repair shop for a new battery, everything else worked fine so no need for a refurbished one, but the battery wasn't holding charge. I was warned that there was a risk of breaking the screen while replacing the battery, and if that happened I'd be stuck with both repairs but the risk wasn't that high.

This is tenterhook territory!

Tentatively phew for the phone rebooting itself, but ... well, the but is pretty clear. Hang in there, little phone!

Hang in until the temps rise again (-20C tonight) and I can bike to the repair store not so far away to get it sussed out.

The question is how I kept track of things the first 50 years of my adult life. Well, I do know how: little day planners that had a section for phone numbers and a section for memos. But how easily one becomes dependent on a device that is, in the end, much more fragile than dead tree. Keeping your life on a phone is madness, but one *must* have one since everyone else does.

I see. Thanks for the info. If the snow holds off I'll try for the repair store not so far away. (Walking distance in the days when I could walk any distance.)
