My doctor calls with my bloodwork results. Both cholesterol and blood sugar are at the 'incipient diabetes and heart attack' stage, so onto medication I go. One will probably give me diarrhea and the other will probably give me muscle aches, so the next two weeks will be unpleasant. This is what comes of six months of near daily gin and tonics, Oreo cookies, Lindt chocolate, and no exercise to speak of, so I shouldn't be surprised. So from now it's none of the above plus no butter, no cheese, no canola oil, no sugar, no white rice, no potatoes... well, you get the idea. 'The blander the better, I'm afraid,' my doctor said, so there we are.

ETA though I can't see why she said no canola oil, which has no cholesterol at all.

I too am prediabetic. I eat regular food, I simply watch my portion sizes. My dietitian and I worked my snacks into my daily portions. She told me to stay away from artificial sugars and to eat only a small amount of foods containing honey or sugar, but they are not forbidden. You simply need to work them into your daily carbohydrate amount. I don't understand the blander the better slogan. Many spices are good for you and help reduce blood sugar and cholesterol. I avoid many because they trigger my acid reflux but you can't take away my pepper and garlic (I used salt sparingly). Also a white potato with butter (she also told me to use real butter but sparingly instead of margarine) has a high glycemic index which means it breaks down slowly and is ok. I can't remember why Canola oil is in the dog house lately but I use it. You could substitute extra virgin olive oil which is supposed to be a good fat too. Did your Doctor suggest you see a Dietitian? It helps. Mine didn't set up a rigid diet but she explained how to make choices and portion sizes.
I don't know much about high cholesterol. Mine fluctuates. I have an appointment for blood work next week so I will see where I stand then.

I think my doctor is flapping a bit. My hope is to get everything down through diet and then suggest I go off the meds. Especially the statins: my cholesterol goes up from time to time and I just eat walnuts and avocadoes till it goes down, and my old doctor would shrug at the stats and say 'Guess you were just having a fat day.'

I should see a dietician anyway, because I can't reconcile what various people are saying. Sometimes baked potatoes have a huge glycemic index but boiled don't, russets are bad but new are ok, no boiled russets that have been allowed to cool are fine, etc etc etc.
