Most people would rather torture themselves than be alone with their thoughts
I like being alone with my thoughts; I spend a lot of time that way. What I don't like is sitting in a chair with them. Lying down, perfect; walking, fine; sitting- without the distraction of a screen or book- ouchy.
They should have tried the experiment with a comfy couch.

Agree with you completely about the cell phones and their rationale. Which still puzzles me: even if I had a cellphone, I have no one to text. Some people are such social butterflies...

Mind, I usually take an hour to get to sleep, so lying in bed and mentally floating is something I'm accustomed to. If I stay up until I fall down I-- don't fall down, and am awake till 6.
